Harvey Weinstein has never been one to put much faith in the length of Academy voters’ memories, so as usual, he’s favoring a late-year release plan for his presumed awards contenders — the prospects of which I was discussing only the other day. Thanks to Coming Soon’s Ed Douglas for pointing out the newly announced […]

New AMPAS invitees include Sorkin, Hooper… and Beyoncé
Posted by Guy Lodge · 5:17 pm · June 17th, 2011
The annual announcement of the new members invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the latest batch of industry pros we get to blame for next year’s Oscar results — is a moment that always prompts as much satisfied head-nodding as bewildered head-scratching. The latter action isn’t always in response […]

Tell us what you thought of ‘Green Lantern’
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:31 pm · June 16th, 2011
I gave Martin Campbell’s “Green Lantern” a big fat pass this week, while the rest of the critical establishment was busy tearing it down. (Guy joined their ranks with a take 180 degrees from mine.) I still think there is a lot of reaching for negativity in many of these assessments, but as the steam […]

Hero takes a fall
Posted by Guy Lodge · 6:35 pm · June 16th, 2011
In coming up with an idle, pop-related title for this post, I was faced with two choices: the one I eventually went with, or “We don’t need another hero.” I decided against the latter — partly because I’m sure other writers have already exhausted it, partly because The Bangles can always do with another shout-out […]

Sony Classics picks up Cronenberg’s ‘Dangerous Method’
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 1:09 pm · June 16th, 2011
Anyone else ready for Michael Fassbender to have a big fat coming out party this year? The press release, in part: Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired the US Rights to David Cronenberg’s A DANGEROUS METHOD from UK based Hanway Films. The film, produced by Jeremy Thomas (THE LAST EMPEROR, SEXY BEAST), […]

INTERVIEW: ‘A Better Life’ director Chris Weitz
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:11 pm · June 15th, 2011
Filmmaker Chris Weitz has taken a ride on a rather inconsistent career path since making a splash (along with brother Paul) with 1999’s “American Pie.” He followed that raunchy comedy with the critically mauled Chris Rock starrer “Down to Earth” before bouncing back with the beloved intimate romantic comedy “About a Boy.” He then fled […]

Nolan and Fincher on the impression left by Malick
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 7:32 pm · June 15th, 2011
Those are three heavyweight names to stuff into one headline, but thanks to some shrewd marketing on the part of Fox Searchlight Pictures, it’s a reality. Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” continues to roll out in its platform release, landing in a boatload of new cities this weekend. As the film prepares to go […]

‘Tabloid’ poster
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:55 am · June 15th, 2011
Last week the trailer for Sundance Selects’ “Tabloid,” one of Errol Morris’s best films in some time, hit the net. The poster has also been floating around, so I thought I’d toss that up as well. Have a look at the full image after the jump.

‘Green’ means go see it
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:17 am · June 15th, 2011
It didn’t really hit me how excited I (still) was for “Green Lantern” until the lights dimmed and the green hit the screen. It can’t be understated how much of a long-time-coming type of thing this is, a theatrical version of such a vast cosmic comic book creation. And given the mechanics of the world, […]
On the Academy’s other rule changes
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 1:48 am · June 15th, 2011
With the big news out of the way, there are a few other annual house-cleaning rule alterations that ought to be addressed. First up, the Best Animated Feature Film category — which seems to get a face-lift in the rule book every summer — will now have anywhere from three to five nominees. As it […]

AMPAS shakes up the Best Picture scenario
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 1:29 am · June 15th, 2011
The Academy has added a new twist to the Best Picture category, which was shaken up two years ago with the expansion of the field from five to 10 nominees. According to a late-breaking press release Monday, the organization has elected the field to include anywhere from five to 10 nominees, depending upon what percentage […]

‘Straw Dogs’ poster
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 5:52 pm · June 14th, 2011
Rod Lurie’s “Straw Dogs” will be hitting theaters this September. The trailer hit last month. Today, the poster. I’m glad marketing went head-on by not just invoking, but straight up reconstituting the striking imagery from the original film’s one-sheet. If you’re gonna do it, might as well go all out. Lurie revealed it today via […]

Something else to remember Laura Ziskin by
Posted by Guy Lodge · 4:43 pm · June 13th, 2011
Across the movie blogs today, you’ve probably seen news of the sad passing of Hollywood super-producer Laura Ziskin, who lost a long battle with breast cancer over the weekend. Most of the obituaries have her name welded to the word “Spider-Man” in their headlines — certainly, her revival of the franchise in 2002 remains the […]

Madonna’s ‘W.E.’ joins Weinsteins’ scattered 2011 slate
Posted by Guy Lodge · 11:56 am · June 13th, 2011
Having done all right with the last film to cover the romantic tribulations of King Edward VIII — it was called “The King’s Speech,” it won a few Oscars, you might have heard of it — The Weinstein Company clearly feels there’s an appetite among audiences for more on that chapter of British royal history, […]

BOX OFFICE: ‘Super’ start
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 2:58 pm · June 12th, 2011
It’s left to be seen whether “Super 8” has the legs a number of people certainly HOPE it has (and we’ll just take the studio’s word on that $50 million price tag). But this is a better start than most were expecting, and a big win for the film overall. (Courtesy: Exhibitor Relations)

Malick goes deeper underground
Posted by Guy Lodge · 11:57 am · June 10th, 2011
First up, some good news for our British readers: the distribution wrangles surrounding “The Tree of Life” have been resolved, and Fox Searchlight will bring the film to UK screens on July 8. Not much longer until you can join the conversation. Given Terrence Malick’s usual work rate, it feels almost perverse to begin talking […]
