It’s only hitting me today that we haven’t offered up any Halloween-y content yet. Strange. This is my favorite time of year, though season-less Southern California certainly does it no favors. Last year we got the contributors together to name the top 20 horror films of all time, an installment of The Lists I’m quite […]

‘Nowhere Boy’ trailer
Posted by Guy Lodge · 7:07 am · October 29th, 2009
Sam Taylor-Wood’s debut feature has its world premiere tonight as it closes out the London Film Festival. I’ll have a short take up for you later today, but for now, here’s the trailer. (I’ll say this much: Kristin Scott Thomas’s recent run of form remains unbroken.)

“We’re going to be fine.”
Posted by Guy Lodge · 9:10 pm · October 28th, 2009
Those of you who enjoy it when Kris and I butt heads over one film or another — as on the two occasions this past week alone that I’ve been unceremoniously fired — will be disappointed to hear that an entente cordiale has arrived in the shape of “A Serious Man.” (Ironic, really — since […]

Tweeting for Oscar
Posted by Guy Lodge · 7:25 pm · October 28th, 2009
The few of you who do follow my Twitter account will have gathered by now that, compared to some, I’m not the most active correspondent in that medium — limiting my thoughts to 140 characters is a trial more often that not. However, should I ever find myself in the hunt for an Oscar (hey, […]

Tell us what you thought of ‘Michael Jackson’s This Is It’
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 6:32 pm · October 28th, 2009
I’ve committed some thoughts on “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” to print already, but since this thing is going to be a blockbuster, I figured it would be great to get some reader reaction. Let us know what you think after you give it a look either this week or over the weekend.

Listen to Sad Brad Smith’s ‘Help Yourself’ from ‘Up in the Air’
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 5:25 pm · October 28th, 2009
It looks like others are finally coming around to what we reported here over a month ago: Sad Brad Smith’s “Help Yourself” from the film “Up in the Air” is a formidable contender in this year’s Best Original Song race. EW’s Adam Markovitz does note something we haven’t conveyed yet, however — that director Jason […]

‘A Prophet’ wins top prize at London Film Festival
Posted by Guy Lodge · 4:50 pm · October 28th, 2009
I always knew Anjelica Huston and I were of a like mind. As I reflect on the 60-odd films I’ve seen the London Film Festival, which draws to a close tomorrow, Jacques Audiard’s French Oscar contender “A Prophet” stands comfortably taller than anything else I’ve seen … and given the standard of this year’s LFF […]

THE LONG SHOT: Mind your language
Posted by Guy Lodge · 3:38 pm · October 28th, 2009
You might not be aware of it, but the competition is already formally under way in Oscar’s most perennially problematic category, Best Foreign Language Film. For almost two weeks now, official Academy screenings of the longlisted contenders in the race have been in progress, and will continue through January, until all 65 titles have been […]

International ‘Green Zone’ trailer

This is much better, and doesn’t make the film look like a “S.W.A.T. 2: Gangsta Boogaloo.” Still, heavy on the action. Take a look:

‘Alice in Wonderland’ at Spike’s Scream 2009
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 11:24 am · October 28th, 2009
How exactly is something that debuted online before Comic-Con, played at Comic-Con and has been in theaters for months now considered “exclusive, never-bef0re-seen footage?” Anyway, I wonder if there will be any jokes/material planned around this film at the Oscarcast, given the film opens the Friday prior. Probably not.

For Yuvawn

I just found out I lost my grandmother. I don’t handle these things very gracefully. I don’t become an emotional mess or anything but I get strangely distant, hurting all the same. She had a stroke not too long ago. And as terrible as it might be to admit, I could never fully steel myself […]

Sam Rockwell’s campaign gears up
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:00 am · October 28th, 2009
Just last week we told you about Duncan Jones’s concentrated grassroots effort to nab Sam Rockwell an Oscar nomination for his tour de force performance in “Moon.” It is a film that, unfortunately, came and went at the marketplace, yet was one of the best films of the summer. And Rockwell, as he’s proven time […]

Playing up the humanity of ‘Avatar’
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:28 am · October 28th, 2009
All eyes on on the big four, films that have yet to screen but expect to play a heavy hand in the Oscar race: “Invictus” (which debuted a poster and a trailer recently), “The Lovely Bones” (which has screened internally at Paramount and is almost finished), “Nine” (which has been beginning to get a look […]

Thoughts on ‘Michael Jackson’s This Is It’
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:54 am · October 28th, 2009
I was going to sit down and write a proper review of “Michael Jackson’s This Is It,” but I hit a wall pretty fast. I don’t know how to review something that was never meant to be a cinematic work of art. It succeeds on so many levels but it also doesn’t aspire to a […]
