Guessing games

Posted by · 7:06 pm · January 22nd, 2009

I only just got round to counting up my correct predictions across all categories, and wound up with a tally of 68 from 97 slots. This is the first year I’ve ever gone remotely public with my Oscar predictions, so while I can tell you that this was a pretty poor year for me (3/5 […]

81st annual Oscar nominations announced, ‘Button’ leads with 13, ‘Dark Knight’ snubbed in Best Pic

Posted by · 6:18 am · January 22nd, 2009

Weinstein is back.  (As are comments…sorry for the delay there.) The short reply is the easy reply: the Academy has embarrassed itself this day.  Seven  nominations across the tech branches and a tip of the hat for Heath Ledger will be the Oscar legacy of “The Dark Knight.” The director — shunned. The writers — […]

TECH SUPPORT: Best Original Song

Posted by · 12:12 pm · December 19th, 2008

As I said a few weeks ago, I would not analyze the last “tech” category until the eligible entries had been announced. Now that the Academy has named 49 finalists for Best Original Song, and with the BFCA and HFPA rattling off their list of nominees (though they are, admittedly, not great predictors), the time […]

Best in show: the year in superlatives

Posted by · 10:22 am · December 19th, 2008

The year is slowly coming to a close, and after this week’s year-in-review pieces, I’m happy to see so much healthy and spirited discussion on my humble picks for the year’s best films.  Today I’m wrapping all of that up with a list of superlatives, some of them in your usual categories, the staples, some […]

Academy shortlists 49 original songs

Posted by · 4:36 am · December 17th, 2008

… and 11 of them (count ’em) are from “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.” That’s over a fifth of the contenders, so I’m guessing the folks at Disney will be pretty mortified if at least one of them doesn’t make the final five. And hell, one of them should. I’m not too snobbish to […]

Runnin’ on empty: the best films of 2008

Posted by · 9:25 am · December 15th, 2008

Just to say it once more, because I’ve certainly brought it up enough, 2008 was not a good year for film-goers. That’s an incredibly subjective quip, of course, but I certainly found myself struggling with the level of quality on display with each and every screening, the oasis of the Oscar season ultimately proving to […]

OFF THE CARPET: Finding a happy place

Posted by · 12:52 pm · December 8th, 2008

I’m reaching that sweet spot of the Oscar season.  That moment right on the cusp of major precursor announcements when critics and audiences begin to join a conversation that’s been talked in circles by us pundits for a few months.  The vacuum is slipping away and the clarity of perspective shines through. Yeah, I can […]

‘Kung Fu Panda’ leads the way at the Annies with 17 noms

Posted by · 11:00 am · December 1st, 2008

DreamWorks Animation has to be happy this morning.  The studio pulled in 27 total nominations with the International Animated Film Society’s annual Annie Awards, including 17 for “Kung Fu Panda,” which led with the most nominations and nearly double the next film on the list.  Walt Disney’s “Bolt” took down 9 nods while Pixar’s “WALL-E” […]
