Guessing games

I only just got round to counting up my correct predictions across all categories, and wound up with a tally of 68 from 97 slots.

This is the first year I’ve ever gone remotely public with my Oscar predictions, so while I can tell you that this was a pretty poor year for me (3/5 for Best Director and a lowly 2/5 for Best Documentary — yikes), I have nothing to prove my usual form. Still, I see I’ve tied with Kris, so no shame in that.

In the major categories, none of my left-field predictions came through for me, though I always knew that my “Gomorrah” screenplay pick and the four projected nods for “Happy-Go-Lucky” were thin limbs to climb on.

In fact, I have to look all the way down to Best Costume Design to find a prediction I’m actually proud of — Danny Glicker’s immaculately observed threads for “Milk” struck me as a slam-dunk the minute I saw the movie, and I was surprised more pundits didn’t agree.

Otherwise, my slate was full of possibilities that I only half-realized: I was convinced Kate Winslet would only get the one nod, but chickened out of promoting her to lead for “The Reader,” and while I was confident “Bolt” would make the Animated Feature cut, I never believed “Waltz With Bashir” would be the film it displaced. (What was up with that, anyway?)

Oh well. There’s always next year.

Yeah I had only category nailed and that was Editing. I had a total of 72 out of 101? Where do I get 101, and you 97? Perhaps a discrepancy with the song category? I had 19 categories with 5 nominees and 2 with 3 nominees. That’s 101 right? Missed 29 of them.

I count 17 categories with five nominees, and 4 with three (Animated, Makeup, Song, VFX).

    But hey, good work!

Speaking of Kris, I notice that not all of the categories are correctly updated–he still has Original Song listed as Bolt, Slumdog, and The Wrestler.
