It’s been a quieter seven days after the upheaval we’ve seen in the race lately, but here’s how things went down: • “Milk” and “Frost/Nixon” finally unspooled for the LA crowd… • … and boy, some people don’t take kindly to criticism of either flick. • Meanwhile, “Doubt” kicked off the AFI Fest… • … […]

Riveting ‘Reader’ trailer
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 7:37 pm · October 31st, 2008
Is it just me or is this trailer for Stephen Daldry’s “The Reader” firing on all cylinders. I was glued to it. I never read Bernhard Schlink’s novel, but I wish I had picked it up somewhere along the line. Click the image below for a peek at the film:

Glad he said it

In his opening remarks Thursday night AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale said even though his fest takes place in the heart of Hollywood, it wasn’t about who’s wearing what, or how much money a movie makes or who might get nominated for awards, it’s all about the films and the work. That’s what the […]

LONDON: Gongs for ‘Mice,’ ‘Tulpan’ … and my own awards
Posted by Guy Lodge · 9:30 am · October 31st, 2008
My last post on the London Film Festival brings some happy news, as one of my favourite festival titles was justly rewarded last night. The festival is not a competion-based one, but three prestigious awards are still handed out before the final screening. One of these is the global festival staple, the FIPRESCI International Critics’ […]

Memo to Christopher Nolan: Come back!
Posted by Blake Rutherford · 7:22 am · October 31st, 2008
By now you’ve probably read Geoff Boucher’s substantial interview with Christopher Nolan at the Los Angeles Times. As Kris mentioned, it’s strategically placed to launch “The Dark Knight” into the awards season. And Nolan has, in my view, a very strong claim for a Best Director nomination. Whether or not he receives it has more […]

It’s James Bond day here in the UK, and to celebrate the opening of “Quantum of Solace,” The Guardian has a nice little feature: a round-up of several Bond themes that never were. Whether submitted on spec, or commissioned by the producers who then changed their minds, it makes for some fascinating listening. Can you […]

‘Doubt’ lands at AFI
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 12:33 am · October 31st, 2008
Miramax honcho Daniel Battsek and actresses Meryl Streep and Amy Adams joined director John Patrick Shanley tonight in introducing the world premiere of “Doubt” as the AFI Fest’s opening gala presentation. The film, adapted from Shanley’s stage play, has quickly become the lead Oscar pony for a studio that dominated the awards circuit last season. […]
Sticking to the music

Way back in April, in my very first post for InContention as it happens, I reported that Marketa Irglova — the delightful star of “Once” and the woman responsible for the best speech of this year’s Oscar ceremony — was in talks to further her acting career by appearing in “Darkness,” a new horror film […]

LONDON: Filling in the gaps
Posted by Guy Lodge · 4:38 pm · October 30th, 2008
Whew. A fortnight and 60-odd films later, I have reached the end of the London Film Festival. It came to a rousing close today with “Slumdog Millionaire,” a film for which I can only echo the enthusiasm that has been expressed nearly everywhere else — a fresh, thrilling, beautiful marriage of classical (even fairytale-style) storytelling […]

AFI is here
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 1:57 pm · October 30th, 2008
AFI Fest launches tonight with an opening gala of John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt,” which as you’ve probably heard, we can’t write about for a week or so. It’s understandable that producer Scott Rudin would prefer critical opinion flow out of the best case exhibiting scenario, so it’s all good. Nothing more from me for now […]

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ trailer

…has dropped at Yahoo! Movies. I’m not overly impressed with it and I actually don’t think it totally represents the film’s emotion, but you gotta sell it. Regardless, the further I spin away from the film, the more I’m becoming convinced that Dev Patel will land a nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Have a look:

TECH SUPPORT: Best Sound Editing — Volume One
Posted by gerardkennedy · 10:59 am · October 30th, 2008
Swoosh. Bang. Grunt. Clink. Crash. These sorts of sounds can add a lot to a film’s mood and plot even though they are not recorded during filming and have to be created and mixed in later on. The individuals who create these effects are rewarded for their efforts in the category of Best Sound Editing. […]
