Yet another interesting stat from this year's Oscar nominations...

This is the first year since 1998 that four of the five Best Picture nominees come from original screenplays, and I believe it's the first time no literary adaptation was in the Best Picture mix.


Good year for original creations.

I think the whole Best Picture race will reveal itself with this category. If Pan's wins Original Screenplay, it could indicate a lack of support for the other nominees, and with The Departed taking Adapted Screenplay, it would tilt the race in Scorcese's favor. If it isn't Pan's, whatever does win would seemingly be The Departed's chief competition.

Four of 1981's Picture nominees were original. On Golden Pond was based on a play.
