"Tech Support": Best Sound Editing - Volume I

Editor's Note: Sorry this is a day late. Computer issues continue to make my life impossible. The site might be image free for a couple of days.

For years now, the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing has been given out from among three nominees, with those three nominees having been chosen by a committee from seven finalists. This year will mark a departure in this regard, as the category abandons the bakeoff stage in the nominations process and also expands to five nominees.

Sound editing (previously called by the more explanatory name sound effects editing) refers to the integration of artificially created sound effects – the “clinks,” “clanks” and “zaps” (to put it crudely) – into the film’s broader soundtrack. What films typically show up here? Lots of action movies, for starters, with a good number of science fiction, war and animated movies as well. These genres particularly necessitate artificial sounds being seamlessly immersed into a film. In fact, I’m willing to say those genres account for almost all of the nominees. Then again, “Memoirs of a Geisha” was nominated here last year. I’m willing to consider that a rather strange fluke nomination for the beloved Wylie Stateman.

I told you Jack would be Supporting. They're all supporting.

I was worried at first about Leo, but I do agree he'll get in for Blood Diamond. Unlike some people out there, I believe that he and the film will be amazing.

Hopefully with this news of Nicholson staying in the category he belongs, you'll still have some faith in Gosling for a nom.

I saw Jeff's link and know quite well that WB has switched all actors to supporting, so you didn't "tell" me anything. Lead was a real possibility being thrown around for the longest time. Enough people felt it was a bad move for WB to change it up.

But Gosling still has a tough road. His film has to be seen.

Meanwhile, if you're going to comment on the Tech Support entry, make sure the comment is about the Tech Support entry.

This is true. But I think the critics awards will help propel Gosling into voters' minds. (Just like it will help for Winslet, whom the Academy loves far more than Bening.) I sure hope ThinkFilm gets a Half Nelson DVD campaign started. And I hope New Line quits being lazy for Little Children's sake, and the sake of Winslet and Haley in particular).

Yes, it was a possibility, without valid substantiation. It was bogus to begin with. Thank God the studio had enough sense to keep Jack where he belongs. I hope Leo can still get a nom this year for something.
