'The Artist' cleans up at the BAFTAs

Posted by · 10:36 am · February 12th, 2012

“The Artist” dominated tonight’s British Academy Awards, winning seven trophies, including Best Film, Director, Actor and Original Screenplay, while its nearest competitor, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” had to be content with wins for Best British Film and Adapted Screenplay.

Predicting Sunday's BAFTA Awards

Posted by · 1:38 pm · February 10th, 2012

The BAFTA Awards take place on Sunday, and offer the Brits the choice between rubber-stamping the Oscar favorite, “The Artist,” and siding with their own pet, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” We consider what will win this year — and what should.

Pulling for you, Gary

Posted by · 10:27 am · February 8th, 2012

Gary Oldman is back in town and hitting the press rounds hard on behalf of his first-ever Oscar nomination for “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” And though I’m fairly resigned to Jean Dujardin turning the trick with Oscar as he did with SAG, I can’t help but wonder — or perhaps merely hope — if things are in such a state of flux within the Best Actor category that a guy like Oldman has a decent shot.

Oscar Guide 2011: Best Music (Original Score)

Posted by · 8:17 am · February 7th, 2012

While the music branch’s choices (or lack thereof) in Best Original Song could be considered shocking, the opposite was true about their final five in Best Original Score. Three of the titles are Best Picture nominees, the branch’s favorite composer of all time is double-nominated yet again and all but one of the finalists have been nominated previously.

Oscar Guide 2011: Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

Posted by · 9:19 am · February 1st, 2012

A script is a film’s blueprint, making it unsurprising that most of the nominees in this category have historically also been nominated for Best Picture. This year was no exception, with three of the final five adapted screenplay contenders also chalked up as the year’s best films. Room was also made for a particularly challenging adaptation of a classic novel and a star-studded film with no other nominations.

The Lists: Top 10 things we learned about the Academy today

Posted by · 9:13 am · January 24th, 2012

It’s been a busy morning. The nominees are out. About a thousand different variations of “it’s humbling and exciting” are coming through from the various contenders. And all eyes are fixing on February 26. But as we transition into phase two of the 2011-2012 film awards season, it’s worth it to pause and consider what we might have learned today.

'Hugo' leads with 11 Oscar nominations, 'War Horse' in, 'Dragon Tattoo' out

Posted by · 4:15 am · January 24th, 2012

The nominees are in and the surprises are few and far between, in my opinion (though others seem to be picking their jaws up off the floor this morning). As indicated yesterday, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” caught fire with voters down the stretch and was very much on their lips. The film turned up in the nine-film Best Picture category today, despite being critically disassembled, and that was pretty much the only eyebrow-raiser of the major categories. The film only showed up in one other category: Best Supporting Actor for Max von Sydow.

Tech Support: Guessing the nominees throughout the Academy's craft categories

Posted by · 7:49 am · January 19th, 2012

In five days, the nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards will be announced. It seems extraordinary that another season has nearly passed. And with a silent film and a somewhat fantastical (not-so-) children’s film poised to dominate the major categories, one realizes how quickly trends can change in Hollywood. But now it’s time to make our final picks across the crafts categories.
