Kathryn Bigelow's 'Zero Dark Thirty' tells it straight, to varying effect
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 4:53 pm · November 25th, 2012
When Kathryn Bigelow walked away with honors for Best Picture and Best Director at the 2009 Academy Awards, she was the little guy. The narrative was David vs. Goliath as James Cameron’s “Avatar” was the big dog on campus, the money-guzzler, “the future.” This year things are a little different.

With ballots due in a matter of hours, we’re in the home stretch of Oscar season. But while some of the races are decided, that doesn’t mean we’re not crossing our fingers for this upset or that for deserving competitors watching the inevitability from the sidelines.

Why it should be 'Tree of Life'
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 11:03 am · February 7th, 2012
When the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were announced two weeks ago, there was one Best Picture nominee that yielded a great sigh of relief from me. It was less that I felt it was deserving (it unquestionably is, but to quote “Unforgiven,” deserve’s got nothing to do with it when it comes to the Oscars) than the fact that I was actually going to have something to passionately champion.

'Hugo' leads with 11 Oscar nominations, 'War Horse' in, 'Dragon Tattoo' out
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 4:15 am · January 24th, 2012
The nominees are in and the surprises are few and far between, in my opinion (though others seem to be picking their jaws up off the floor this morning). As indicated yesterday, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” caught fire with voters down the stretch and was very much on their lips. The film turned up in the nine-film Best Picture category today, despite being critically disassembled, and that was pretty much the only eyebrow-raiser of the major categories. The film only showed up in one other category: Best Supporting Actor for Max von Sydow.

'The Help,' 'Pariah' lead NAACP Image Award nominees
Posted by Guy Lodge · 10:20 am · January 20th, 2012
With six and five nominations respectively, “The Help” and “Pariah” represent the yin and yang of current African American-themed cinema, so it’s apt that they should lead the field in the NAACP Image Awards.
