Oscar's big miss: 'Singin' in the Rain'
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 8:58 am · February 25th, 2012
What equates to a “big miss” anyway? What does it mean? Does it mean the Academy looks foolish in hindsight? Does it translate to just an unfortunate opportunity lost? What I settled on was merely the concept of not recognizing greatness in its own time, and indeed, I think the test of time is necessary to really gauge.

Oscar Guide 2011: Best Picture
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 7:43 am · February 25th, 2012
The 2011 Oscar Guide has finally reached its destination: the nine-film Best Picture category, which saw its biggest surprise in the very fact that it stretched to that many nominees. It became somewhat obvious down the stretch that five films were assured a spot, with another highly likely. The extraneous possibilities seemed to number no more than three or four, but two of them got in.

My favorite Oscar win: Anton Furst and Peter Young for 'Batman'
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 9:40 am · February 22nd, 2012
The spring and summer of 1989 were dominated by a solitary image — the Batman logo — plastered on lunch boxes, hats, posters, anything marketable. Oscar Guide 2011: Best Music (Original Song)
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 11:34 am · February 21st, 2012
So, 39 songs were qualified for eligibility in this year’s Best Original Song race. 39. That’s one short of 40. But apparently 37 of them just weren’t good enough for the sound branch, as the category turned up two — yes, two — contenders. And one of them is dubious at best, while the other appears now to be entering a cake walk for the win.

The Motion Picture Sound Editors’ (MPSE) 59th annual Golden Reel Awards were held this evening, celebrating excellence in sound editing. “Super 8,” you’ll recall, led the way with nominees (as well as with the Cinema Audio Society), yet failed to score an Oscar nod in either sound category.
