Last week Fox Searchlight launched the official trailer for Tony Goldwyn’s “Conviction,” which elicited, shall we say, strong reactions from the readership. Today they’ve released a larger version of the poster image that accompanied the trailer. Take a look after the jump.

Fail. That image does nothing to suggest struggle, conviction or what we do for family.
This will be your #1 film of the year.
I just don’t understand how so much blandness, from the name to the poster, can be acceptable to multi-million dollar advertising dollars.
Yeah, the trailer wasn’t awful, but this poster is, in terms of being more than a kind of pretty picture. True story or not, I’d never heard of Betty Ann Waters before this movie, and if I hadn’t seen the trailer, I’d know nothing about the plot or characters. Bleh.
I think that this is not bad. They could have shown something really intense but instead they showed what state the protagonists long for. I think it’s an interesting choice even if it seems lazy.
***POSSIBLE SPOILER!****I did some research, and apparently Waters’ brother died in a fall about six months after she secured his release; I wonder if they’re going to include that, at the risk of not ending on the inspirational note they’re clearly aiming for.
I’ll never see this movie but even I think it’s kind of shitty to post that comment Irishman
That was never my intent. I’m really, really sorry.
This definitely reeks of a big fail. I think Sam Rockwell is the only awards player as far as Conviction is concerned.
I think there is some hyperbole re this movie. I mean, doesn’t Secretariat seem worse? Why is the idea of it (since we haven’t seen either) less hated? Just because it’s a Disney film?
At least this movie has a possibly much more interesting story to tell.
i have no idea wtf this movie or its “true story” are about and it feels kinda nice, frankly.
i like the poster and on my opinion, the trailer is generic
[…] brother who has been convicted of murder. Recently the official movie poster has been released via In Contention. Check it out […]
To Irishman: Well that puts it even more in line with the two times she undeservingly won.
Jim, “Secretariat” looks far worse but it never really looked like an Oscar movie so the reaction around Oscar websites hasn’t been as vitriolic. Make no mistake though, the “Secretariat” marketing is dreadful.
I wrong on the other entry that this poster is very apt. It’s so bland, just like the title. I’m not sure what they should have done (i’m glad there’s no floating heads although there is plenty of empty space up there for them to rectify that for the DVD release) but this is just nothing. Literally nothing. Might as well advertise their movie with air.
If you think her win for “Boys Don’t Cry” was undeserving, well, uh, I don’t know what to tell you except you might be an idiot.
