As usual, the Oscar race for Best Cinematography presents an embarrassment of riches this year. Contending directors of photography have offered exemplary work, whether highlighting fantasy or history, focusing on land or water, displaying composed and gorgeous widescreen shots or gripping action and dynamic camera movement. One film managed to do all of these things, and used two DPs to do it.

Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer are all set to blow Toronto audiences’ minds with the premiere of “Cloud Atlas” in a few short days. Everything I’ve heard about the ambitious ensemble project ends up pointing to “it’s not for everyone,” but each new nugget certainly makes me think it’ll be for me.

Warner Bros. sets October release for 'Cloud Atlas' while Searchlight renames 'The Sessions'

October 26 is a pretty sweet spot to be opening a film you might want to pitch for awards, and Warner Bros. has just settled on that date for “Cloud Atlas,” Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski’s 165 minute adaptation of David Mitchell’s kaleidoscopic novel, which follows six separate but connected narratives through an array of genres.
