It was a good day for Marvel with the release of the 41st annual Saturn Awards nominations (geared toward genre work on the big and small screen). “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” led overall on the film side with 11 nominations, while “Guardians of the Galaxy” picked up nine.

The 39th annual Saturn Awards were presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films tonight in Burbank, Calif. Top prizes for film went to “The Avengers,” “Life of Pi,” “The Cabin in the Woods” and “Skyfall,” while “Revolution,” “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead” triumphed in the television categories.

Author Richard Matheson was set to receive the Visionary Award at the 39th annual Saturn Awards Wednesday night, presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. Pity the award will now be presented posthumously, but the ceremony will now be dedicated to his memory.

Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' leads the way with Saturn Awards nominations

Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” led the way with nine nominations for the 39th annual Saturn Awards, recognizing the best in genre filmmaking. It picked up nods in the Best Fantasy Film and Best Director categories, among others. Not far behind were Ang Lee’s Oscar nominee “Life of Pi” with eight and Sam Mendes’s James Bon actioner “Skyfall” with seven.

The 38th annual Saturn Awards, recognizing achievement in genre filmmaking, were held this evening. “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, ” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” won across the organization’s three Best Film categories. “Super 8” also picked up a pair of statues, including Best Director.
