Off the Carpet: As the music stops, fringe hopefuls cross their fingers

Posted by · 10:33 am · January 16th, 2012

As of Friday, phase one of this year’s Oscar season has drawn to a close. Ballots were due by 5pm and it’s pencils down, the music has stopped, whatever metaphor you want to apply. And the period of December 27 – January 13 was crucial for films looking to grab a last-minute foothold and those hoping to maintain dominance alike.

We talk to her about her career ambitions, her relationship with Lars von Trier and her dreams of acting in German.

The American Society of Cinematographers announce their nominees tomorrow. Emmanuel Lubezki has swept the precursors for “The Tree of Life,” but it’s no sure thing that the Academy will follow suit — though a recent Variety feature makes it clear a lot of his peers are in his corner.

'Descendants,' Malick, Clooney and Dunst win with Kansas City critics

Posted by · 5:10 pm · January 8th, 2012

The Kansas City Film Critics Circle held its vote this evening and “The Descendants” was named the year’s best. I was somewhat confused that “Hugo” won an award designated for sci-fi/fantasy/horror films, though. How does that perception even happen?

Posted by · 5:31 pm · December 20th, 2011

The Women Film Critic Circle has come out in strong favor of “The Help,” “The Iron Lady” and “The Whistleblower.” The association has made selections that feel generally in line with the films and performances one would imagine ought to be be highlighted in this year’s landscape. Though I will confess their choices are seasoned with one or two surprises.
