Yeah, the Austin Film Critics Association naturally dug the Austin-set “Boyhood,” and yeah, they showed a lot of love for “Nightcrawler.” But the single coolest thing they did Wednesday in their awards announcement was single out “Joe” star Gary Poulter.

'The Fifth Estate,' '12 Years a Slave,' 'August: Osage County' and more set for 2013 Toronto Film Festival

It was revealed today that Bill Condon’s “The Fifth Estate,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Wiki Leaks found Julian Assange, will be the opening night film of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, which kicks off on Sept. 5. The closing night film will be Daniel Schecter’s “Life of Crime” with John Hawkes, Mos Def and Jennifer Aniston.

Al Pacino signs on for David Gordon Green's 'Manglehorn'

When that fake list of Cannes titles went up a few weeks back, just a day or two before the official line-up was unveiled, I was hoping one particular title was true: David Gordon Green’s “Joe.” Alas, it wasn’t. The film stars Nicolas Cage and Tye Sheridan (hot of an amazing performance in “Mud,” directed by Green’s former North Carolina school mate Jeff Nichols) and it’s part of what I feel is a new period for Green as an artist, taking what he’s learned (and the relationships he’s built up) to date and finding more fertile creative territory. His next film sure seems to be an extension of that.
