Posted by Guy Lodge · 5:28 am · January 6th, 2012
“Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” and “My Week With Marilyn” lead the BAFTA longlists with 16 mentions apiece, setting both films up for multiple nominations on January 17. But the list of omissions is egregious.

Posted by Guy Lodge · 3:20 pm · January 5th, 2012
The Cinema Eye Honors may chiefly be a celebration of the documentary form, but their Heterodox Award has been created to recognize documentary influences in fiction filmmaking. Mike Mills’s autobiographical indie “Beginners” is one of this year’s nominees.

Tech Support Interview: Bret McKenzie on his 'Muppety' additions to 'The Muppets'
Posted by Roth Cornet · 2:24 pm · January 5th, 2012
Bret McKenzie is not a fan of musicals. Or so he says. But his (alleged) lack of interest in musical theater is somewhat ironic given that he has made his name as one half of the folk comedy duo “Flight of the Conchords” (his other half being Jemaine Clement), and that he is (in all likelihood) about to receive one, if not two, Academy Award nominations for Best Original Song.

Internet Film Critics award 'Tree of Life,' 'Midnight in Paris,' 'Attack the Block,' 'Drive'
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 10:35 am · January 5th, 2012
The Internet Film Critics Society has jumped into the fray with a list of winners this year. It’s a nifty list because rather than just a “Best Picture” field, things are divided into a couple genres (drama, comedy, action, horror/sci-fi). Though I don’t qualify “Drive” as “action.”

The news that Martin Scorsese is to receive BAFTA’s highest honor, the Fellowship, at the British Academy’s awards ceremony next month is neither unexpected nor unwelcome — but why in a year when he’ll likely be in the regular BAFTA race for “Hugo?”

Predicting the 2011 WGA nominees

Tomorrow the Writers Guild of America (WGA) announces its narrative feature and documentary nominees. Something to remember is that a number of this year’s Oscar-contending screenplays are ineligible for the award due to membership or signatory issues, meaning this is just an opportunity for other films that wouldn’t normally have much room to get into the awards conversation.
