Taking it to church

In the wake of last week’s semi-surprise Best Picture nomination, the New York Times has rather an interesting piece on the sly marketing strategies that propelled “The Blind Side” to phenomenon status in the first place — tactics a Hollywood marketing consultant likens to “the regional marketings approach of the 50s, 60s and 70s.” What […]

Could Kubrick’s Holocaust film get made after all?

Posted by · 5:39 am · August 10th, 2009

“Aryan Papers” is a title that is probably familiar to keen students of the great Stanley Kubrick, representing as it does a sadly missed opportunity in his abruptly curtailed career. Posted by · 7:59 am · August 27th, 2008

Well, if nothing else, 2009’s Best Costume Design award is forespoken. Screen Daily reports that Warner Brothers is beginning production next month on “Coco Before Chanel,” a French-language biopic of the iconic fashion designer. Warner will distribute the film internationally next year. Audrey Tautou will play Chanel (presumably after flipping a coin with Marion Cotillard), […]

Poland calls ‘Speed Racer’ a “masterpiece”

Posted by · 10:42 am · April 1st, 2008

Well, as usual, he doesn’t come right out and say it, but his implications are obvious. This film looks like an absolute headache to me, and considering the Wachowski brothers have not created something that caught my fancy since the first installment of “The Matrix” nine years ago, I’m not holding my breath here. Poland’s […]
