1997 was a great year for actors, but a tough year for Oscar; how do you choose when there are so many deserving nominees? It’s that age-old issue that some award-worthy performances are going to be left out, which though unfair and sad, is very much part of the Academy Awards and frankly what makes [...]

THE LISTS: Top 10 Tarantino characters
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 12:31 pm · August 18th, 2009
It’s been over a month since we cranked out an installment of The Lists, but with Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” set for release on Friday, it seemed a good time to cook up a new collective. When most people praise Tarantino’s skill as a screenwriter, they tend to focus on his well-honed ear for dialogue. [...]

“My natural reaction was, ‘Aw, s***!’ There’s that one little second when they call your name and you think, ‘Maybe the law of averages is gonna catch this motherf***er now. I’m gonna win this one!’ And I didn’t. I didn’t forget the camera was there, I just didn’t give a f***. So I went with [...]

Movie stingers: do they work?
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 4:39 am · July 8th, 2008
If you saw “Hancock” over the weekend, you probably noticed a brief scene in the middle of the closing credits sequence featuring Mike Epps and meant as a funny punch for your theater exiting pleasure. It got me thinking about inter- and post-credit sequences — called ”stingers” – and whether they ought to be eliminated altogether. I ask this despite [...]

Audiences to see a different ‘Iron Man’ than critics?
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 12:26 pm · May 1st, 2008
At Monday’s screening of “Iron Man,” I was sad to see that Samuel L. Jackson’s much-anticipated cameo as S.H.I.E.L.D. leader Nick Fury wasn’t in the cut. Though director Jon Favreau has suggested the scene might surface in the DVD release. Well New York Mag’s Vulture blog points us today to a Comic Book Resources story [...]
