In Contention

Come join us at HitFix!

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 12:30 pm · September 20th, 2011

We have officially relocated to our new home at HitFix. So come on over to the new URL — hitfix.com/incontention — and join the on-going goings-on. All of yesterday’s material is backdated there and patiently awaits, so feel free to continue the discussion there.

If you’re thinking to yourself right now, “Wait, huh?,” then fear not. All your answers can be found here and here.

You can comment as a guest at HitFix just as you can here, but I recommend registering for an account with them. Keeps it nice and organic. The link for that is at the op right of the main page, or go directly here.

This page will be up for a very brief transitional period. Soon it will redirect you to the new location and later on, all the content here will have magically migrated over.

InContention.com, signing off.

I went to the page and I found this:
“This page has disappeared or is lost”

    Is everything alright, guys??
(this change kinda scared me :P I just love this website so much).

Kris, do you think you’ll add a recent comments sidebar? It’s always been one of my favorite features

Really disappointing to see the below the line sidebar predictions gone.

The sidebar predictions will be going through some changes over the next few weeks, Lucas. I want them back so likely they’ll show up again soon. Just needed to carry something over for now.

Well, I must say I prefer this layout and design than the one at Hitflix. You have a lot of nice features and space here that are gone at Hitflix (the recent comments sidebar, for example, as Rashad pointed out)

Sigh. I sincerely hope I get used to your new home.

I also second Rashad’s query. The comment sidebar is gonna be missed dearly… but so far it’s nice to have a profile picture, and to directly reply comments.

Jeez, guys, a little positivity. Change is good. We’ll all adapt.

There is, by the way, a recent comments section, but it’s on the home page of HitFix and reflects recent comments at all the blogs. It’s not the same but it’s what they have. I can suggest implementing it per blog.

Hadn’t I commented here already? Weird.

Anyways, yeah, I second Rashad’s query. The comments sidebar will be greatly missed. :(

I like the avatars and reply systems, though! ☺

Pardon the technologically inept question, but is there an RSS link for the new page at HitFix that works? I tried the hitfix slash-blogs, slash-incontention URL on Google Reader but it doesn’t work.

Just wanted to get in one last comment on this site. I actually feel sentimental about this whole thing, if you can believe it. But again, onward and upward.

I hope this partnership ends up being worth sacrificing a decently usable website for a complete eyesore. You’d think they could afford to hire a web designer or at least have some sense of what it’s actually like to visit their site.

Don’t think I’ll be a daily visitor anymore if that’s what I have to trudge through, but at least there’s RSS.

Glad to know it’s the content that matters, Graysmith.

Anyway, it’s a site with intense annual growth. They’re doing something right. If it’s REALLY such a pain to follow us to a site that really did a decent job (I think) marrying the two styles, well, sorry to see you go. People like to cling aggressively to their vote, so if you’re vote is, “No, thanks,” well…like I said, sorry to see you go.

Can someone help me with Google Reader? I tried the HitFix URL that was provided and it doesn’t work, and I don’t understand the above mentioned solutions…

The content is what matters, but it’s hard to appreciate the movie when there’s a screaming baby, if you get the analogy.

I’m sure I’ll come around eventually, I just think it’s a shame to lose this site in favor of one where I can’t even see the body text of the first article without having to scroll down.

Kris, please, sorry for kicking the baby, but Hitfix is actually a design eyesore as Graysmith pointed out. My reading and visiting of websites do get affected by their layout and composition. You would think it’s “just the content” what matters but, then again, don’t most of us judge a book by its cover? I’ll follow you guys in my Google Reader as that will not be assaulted by the visual clutter of the hitfix site. However, someone high on hitfix do need to pay attention to studies on human perception, usability in design, and composition guidelines.

All in all, cheers. And I wish you the best in this new phase.

    Matt: Eventually, yes.

Re: the RSS feed, it is:

    http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/in-contention.rss

It pops up as “Recent Posts at In Contention” or something like that, so you’ll need to rename. I know when I originally added it to my feed I didn’t notice it immediately because of that, but it works fine in Google Reader, so let me know if there are any issues.

Jones: I think the IC set-up at HitFix is a nice marriage of the two. It doesn’t look like the main page and there’s a natural flow. Resist if you must but I hope you’ll join us and adapt.

Graysmith: What do you mean about the body text? Is it really all that different than here, where there’s a photo (now slightly bigger and on the left rather than the left) and a click through to read the rest of the article?

The “FALL TV KICKOFF” thing will be gone soon, FYI. That’s just for this week. Then the scroll-down won’t be such a painful, bloodletting chore. :)

If the site’s too cumbersome for you to read comfortably, here’s a hint: use Maxthon or any other web browser with a reader mode enabled and you’ll get this: http://goo.gl/zmD6R
