Albert Brooks talks ‘Drive’

Posted by · 8:35 am · September 16th, 2011

The great Albert Brooks took playful Twitter umbrage with my yanking him from the predicted five supporting actor contenders recently. I assure you (and him) that it’s a lack of faith in the Academy, which would enter uber-cool territory by giving him (or anything) a nod for this film, not a lack of faith in his work. He’s fantastic in the film and, well, nothing’s impossible. I’d be over the moon. Brooks and the rest of the team recently made the press rounds on the film. So, from our new partners at HitFix, via Awards Campaign:

We’ll have a “tell us what you thought” post on the film later today.

Well, Brooks got robbed in, what?, ’88?, when he should have won for Broadcast News, so I’m REALLY hoping for at least another nomination. And even though I’m kind of sick of the Academy’s villain fetish in the supporting categories, I wouldn’t turn my nose up at a win.

    (Nothing against Sean Connery, btw.)

That’s funny. You should give him a permanent spot in the top 5 whether you believe he’ll get a nod or not.

I thought you were there to influence the Academy? If you want it you should put it back, isn’t that what this site is for?

    You thought wrong.

    “what this site is for?”

To tell it like it is.

Well it that’s the case in what Academy universe is Patton Oswald getting nominated? Or any support from Ides of March. My friend saw that in Toronto and said it is plain vanilla.

Probably right about Ides but great word on Oswalt. Fluid category at the moment. Brooks could happen.

After actually seeing the movie last night I have to agree with Kris that Brooks has a bit of an uphill battle to climb to get the nomination, which kind of saddens me, but kudos to you Kris for not using your predictions to jump on some bandwagon.

One thing I love about this site is that I feel like it really is an Oscars site, not a “hey, I love movies so I’m going to try to influence the Oscars” site.

Although now that I say that I see you’ve re-added him to your top five, LOL.

Also, it seems strange that your predictions were updated two days from now.

Also saw the movie last night. I don’t think Brooks has an uphill battle. I sat in a theater and didn’t know I was watching the same person from the last several decades. A completely different character. From his walk to his voice to even these scary facial tics. That is what great acting is. We have seen that part so many times played by others but nothing like this.

Have you guys seen BIG FAN with Patton Oswalt? He is legit.

    I wonder:
Plummer best actor. Brooks for supporting actor. Solid work and a little lifetime award.
