‘Contagion’ character posters

Posted by · 3:57 am · August 10th, 2011

I’ve successfully dodged the trailer — and swiftly ducked out of any online discussion — for Steven Soderbergh’s “Contagion,” to I can honestly say that I haven’t the faintest idea what it’s about, and plan to stay cheerfully ignorant until the lights go down at its Venice press screening in a few weeks’ time. Fortunately, this set of six character posters that hit the web yesterday doesn’t shed any more light, selling the film on its tantalizing cast and a hazy sense of foreboding that invites so many questions. What’s going on? Why can’t we touch anyone? Why has Matt Damon switched bodies with Mark Wahlberg? Why is Jude Law preserved in ice? And what did poor Gwyneth Paltrow, here lobbying hard for Ron Howard’s long-gestating Tilda Swinton biopic, do to so displease the film’s marketers?

All will be revealed in under a month. The most arresting of the designs is after the cut, followed by the most flattering (Marion Cotillard clearly has friends in the right places) — check out the rest at Yahoo! Movies.

That Gwyneth one is WAY unflattering. However, Marion and Kate look just fine. Matt does look oddly like Mark Wahlberg, Laurence looks menacing, and Jude has his head incased in ice. Marion’s is the only one that seems out of place, IMHO. She looks like an undercover spy or something, a femme fatale.

Really? He hardly looks like Wahlberg. Or maybe I’m not looking closely enough.

On the contrary, you’re probably looking too closely. It’s a first-glance thing. For me, at least.

Totally psyched to see Soderbergh took a studio picture with a great cast and a promising premise. Could be not only an effective human drama, but also a horror film.

Agreed that Gwyneth looks like Tilda Swinton in both this poster and the trailer… Guy, I can’t believe you do not know much about the story since Soderbergh has been talking about this movie for sometime (maybe since Girlfriend Experience).

Not sure how tongue-in-check you intended this to be but that looks like some kind of HAZMAT suit to me which makes sense given the title.

lol Glen I am 100% certain Guy was being completely tongue-in-cheek.

Also shouldn’t Tilda Swinton be in the Ron Howard Tilda Swinton biopic?

As if Tilda Swinton would ever work for Ron Howard. It’s an unauthorised biopic, you know.

Haha! I LOVE your comments, Guy.

I’m not sure showing the part where Gwyneth is dying on the hospital bed is a good move to promote the film (i.e. the trailer, poster, etc.). I mean, does she appear anywhere else at all?

+ Kate looks gorgeous (the only one who’s normal with Marion)

There are millions of pretty pictures out there, esp of subjects as beautiful as Marion and Kate. Gwyneth’s is a real image, and the one that gets me right in the theater, as if I weren’t there already. I say Well-Played to GP and her team.

Or it is just impossible to make Cotillard look anything less than spectacular ;)

It’s not impossible, but it seems the makeup artists that manage the feat are immediately rewarded with an Oscar.

Call me stupid, does that mean you didn’t think La Vie En Rose deserved make-up?
