‘Melancholia’ trailer

Posted by · 4:16 am · April 8th, 2011

I’m continuing my 2011 resolution of not watching trailers for films I’m really looking forward to, but for the less ascetic among you, here’s our first glimpse of Lars von Trier’s latest, which will doubtless turn up in next month’s Cannes lineup. As many of you know, I’m always in the tank for von Trier — I was firmly on the “pro” side of the “Antichrist” debate two years ago — and with that fascinatingly eclectic cast on board, including a second go-round for Charlotte Gainsbourg, I scarcely need to see any footage to put this atop my “most anticipated” list. Click on the image below to watch it at the film’s official website, or check out the embed after the jump.

    Can’t. Stop. Watching.

Sad people, strange SF and luscious cinematography all in the one film. I do believe Von Trier made this specifically for me.

Wow. I thought Antichrist was a thematically incoherent mess, but I’m excited to see this. Looks very strange and unlike any von Trier film I’ve seen.

I didn’t like Antichrist but have loved most of his work. 2011 looks like a very “cosmic” year for film.

Wow, what an exquisite trailer! Great cast, great music, great cinematography, it seems to have it all. I cannot wait to see this film in theaters, it’s going to be epic!

Also, does anyone know an ETA on when the Cannes Lineup is gonna drop? It seems like it should be very soon with the fest almost a month away…

    Epic. Truly.

I think this film and ‘Tree of Life’ would make for an interesting double feature.

Kirsten looks great in this; stellar cast. I loathe Von trier because his work often seems gratuitous but this, this looks like something special. Penelope would have been a miscast (as she often is)

I love it. But I love most of von Trier’s work including Antichrist, not including The Idiots. I would’ve been looking forward to this anyways but I like what I see. Am particularly excited to see Kiki doing some real acting.
Tree of Life, this and We need to talk about Kevin – that’s what I need to see this year above all other films.

Grrrr, have to wait til much later to see it (after work).

I need a new trailer to fawn over (Crazy Stupid Love trailer has been on loop with me for days).

As somebody who is pretty unfamiliar with von Trier’s previous work (I’ve only seen “Dogville,” which I thought was fantastic), I think this looks incredibly interesting (and beautiful). The wedding scenes, in particular, remind me of the best parts of “Rachel Getting Married.”

I’m with you Guy–this was already one of my most anticipated films of the year and now, even more so!

Strong shows from Dunst, Gainsbourg and Rampling, can’t wait!

I was on the “anti” side of the Antichrist debate and I’m *still* excited for this!

Dogville was a minor masterpiece, but I have had various degrees of dislike for everything else he does. Antichrist was a travesty to me. This looks a little better, though.

Kirsten Dunst looks like she’s giving us something we’ve never seen from her before. Awesome.

I thought Dogville was just brilliant and Antichrist – I still haven’t figured out what I think of it – and this looks really interesting! Don’t Dunst, Gainsbourg and Rampling look great!

Didn’t watch the trailer yet, but should I have any reason to believe this one won’t be another perverse, interminable misogyny-fest from cinema’s resident nutjob?

OT: Sidney Lumet has passed away. A true treasure of film. HIs last film was “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” and a great film it was.

    @Afrika

I don’t think Penelope is in this (assuming you’re referring to Penelope Cruz). I could be wrong though. Maybe you’re confusing Charlotte Gainsbourg for her?

Anyway, I love von Trier and I’m super-excited for this. Heck, I even adored Manderlay, which I know many people did not like. In true LvT fashion, I’m expecting a speechlessly horrific or sad ending.

Jasper, Cruz was originally cast in the Dunst role.

    This looks *so* good!
