I cant believe someone in that panel said that “when i go to Rite Aid, I say that’s Kings Speech person, that’s King’s Speech person. and they wouldnt get The Social Network in a million years”.

What a condescending comment! I dont know why she thinks that anyone who thinks TSN is not the best movie of the year thinks so because he ors he doesnt get the movie!
What makes she think that she is smarter than people so she gets the movie??
    Rude and ego-centric!

I know. Anne’s voice does not match her appearance. I’m always stunned, too.

    ………..

I think that a movie like TSN would have won in 06, 07, or 09 (had The Departed, No Country, Hurt Locker not existed).

The reason it may not win this year is because everything fell into place for The King’s Speech:

Director of hugely popular John Adams.
Firth winning a year after he almost did.
Geoffrey Rush, HBC, huge British ensemble cast.
    An interesting story.
    Stellar writing.
    Great technicals.
And … it’s actually pretty darn good.

I just feel like it’s the antidote movie to those who don’t quite see what was so ‘omg amazing’ about TSN. I’m not on of those people, but I see it as the antidote; the popular ‘other’ choice.

Also, TKS is an Oscar-y movie that actually lived up to the hype. Dreamgirls didn’t hit the mark. Atonement got lost in the shuffle with No Country, TWBB, & Juno. Benjamin Button was deemed too cold. Australia didn’t make an impression with AMPAS or critics. Nine & Invictus disappointed. The King’s Speech has not.

Some of these people are acting as though The Social Network is the most complicated and sophisticated concept ever. It’s really not. It’s a version of the hugely archetypal The Great Gatsby centered around a populist media phenomenon. Who do they imagine “doesn’t get” the movie?

    John G,

apparently some people at Rite Aid are not supposed to get that movie!
    Just a stupid comment!

Thats the main reason now I come to this site to follow Oscars. Much calmer, peaceful and more respectful to the followers :)

Yeah, The Great Gatsby and the Social Network are both totally lowbrow, accessible entertainment.

Neither are lowbrow, but both are totally accessible. The dialogue in The Social Network is fast moving and articulate, but the concept is pretty straightforward. The movie made $90 million at the box office; most moviegoers use the internet and have a grasp on friendship, loneliness, and betrayal. It’s insulting nonsense to say that people who like The King’s Speech don’t understand The Social Network. Watching the movie isn’t exactly multi-variable calculus, people.

This. People always refer to the “golden critics era” of 06-09 when Oscar lined up with critics, but really, what it was was several “Oscar” pics falling by the wayside. Maybe the Academy never really changed.

I was wondering why there were no InContention boys there!

That Jeff Wells is quite the character.

I think that once you see King’s Speech take a DGA award you understand that this thing cannot be explained away by Harvey’s involvement or other subjective factors. Not the DGA. This movie really does run pretty deep and maybe the key to his success is that he doesn’t bank on losers.

I just don’t subscribe to this whole NOW that King’s Speech is winning I will back it thing (The whole “temprature of the week” thing). I think it’s a very wrong way to go about “predicting”.
