Tomorrow’s the big day. And there are always surprises. But rather than offer a space for predicting shockers, I thought I’d ask for your wish list picks. Name three nominations (in the major categories) that seemingly have no chance whatsoever, but are still in the acceptable realm of possibility, which would send you over the moon.
For example, I might consider “Exit Through the Gift Shop” to be the best film of the year, but for these purposes it’s more appropriate to go with something like “Shutter Island” or, better yet, “The Way Back” for my “wish list” picks in Best Picture. Make sense?
I’ll start…
Best Picture: “The Way Back”
Best Director: Mike Leigh, “Another Year”
Best Original Screenplay: “Four Lions”
You? (My final predictions are here if you missed them.)

What can I say? I thought it was absolutely delightful and, in some ways, even better than Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

One quick note: if anyone out of the entire True Grit cast gets nominated for best Supporting Actor, it should be Brolin. Seriously. The most 3-dimensional performance/character in the entire movie. It needs to be said. Pepper was also good.
And I am astonished to report that I found Bridges somewhat… muted. There.

(I tried to go with things which I feel have little-to-no shot at getting in to the finals. I wanted to choose Ryan Gosling for ‘Blue Valentine’ but I think he’s certainly in the top 6 or 7 choices. I’m hoping he can sneak in! And Michelle Williams as well, of course. Certainly over Manville or Swank or Steinfeld—who I hopes gets Supporting so she can win…even if it is category fraud).

Yes to Barbara Hershey, Marion Cotillard Armie Hammer ( why didn’t he get Oscar push ? ) , and Edgar Ramirez . Please, no , to Blake Lively’s laughable performance and Noomi Rapace.

Best Actress: Hailee Steinfeld (because she’s in nearly every frame and should not be considered “supporting” at all)
Best Adapted Screenplay: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
Best Animated Feature: Megamind (the category really should be five nominees this year. The Academy’s rules are stupid.)

Also, I’m glad The Ghost Writer has almost no chance. It was just a ham-fisted political statement disguised as a political thriller (which wasn’t thrilling). If Polanski’s name wasn’t attached, critics would have realized its mediocrity.

Best Director: Roman Polanski, The Ghost Writer.
I can hear the hushed whispers from the audience now…..
Best Supporting Actor: Josh Brolin OR Barry Pepper, True Grit.
Their roles were so small, but I thought they were the most outstanding of the cast (minus Hailee Steinfeld)
Best Original Screenplay: Easy A.
I know I know. But despite its conventional story archs, this is one of the better teen oriented films in a while. Why not sneak in a nomination other than Emma Stone (who may or may not get one)?

Hopefully, How to Train Your Dragon gets nods for Picture, Animated Feature, Score, Adapted Screenplay, and the two Sound categories. Wishful thinking, but I’ll take as many of those as I can get, which is hopefully more than just the one for Feature.
