Thanks to everyone for participating in our “Black Swan” music box contest. It’s tough to illuminate the pro and con of a movie and I think everyone gave it a great stab.
Ultimately, I was most convinced by Bryan and Cat Scott’s entries. So each of you drop me a line with your address and we’ll get your prizes in the mail. Winning entries after the jump.
Bryan:
Black Swan should win because it’s a pulpy, soapy terror-treat examining the masochism of beauty and the creative process.
Black Swan should not win because watching it is an at times beautiful but often masochistic examination of a pulpy, soapy terror-treat.
Cat Scott:
Black Swan deserves to win because of its frightening editing, overwhelming sound design, beautifully constructed set design and costuming, and heart-pounding psychological ambiguity, but it doesn’t deserve to win because the experience doesn’t say anything about mankind in general, only about the potential of great artists.

I don’t think that ‘not saying anything about mankind in general’ is bad enough to make Black Swan undeserving of winning. For a terror movie, I’d rather have an individualistic story than something overtly preachy.
Regardless, congrats to both of you ☺

It’s a fair criticism, though, and one I actually hear, not in so many words, from time to time. I just thought Cat did a nice job of summing up that perspective.

i wonder if enough voters catched the underlying plot of this movie: mother- daughter sexual abuse. That´s the only way to recognize the masterpiece this film is. I post this ´cause i haven´t read any reviews making reference and think it´s quite essencial to fully apreciate the great job aronofski did. Found this articles very useful. BS for the win!!!!http://freedomainradio.com/BOARD/forums/p/28984/222956.aspx

I think that the take outlined above is fundamentally wrong and the mother character is nothing more than a red herring. I thik the movie is entirely about Nina, whose is the source of her own troubles.

So is Bryan a relative or just an old friend?
