‘Red State’ trailer

The trailer for Kevin Smith’s latest has been bouncing around the last few days as the writer/director has been on a bit of a public (via Twitter) diatribe for the better part of the holiday.  It seems he won’t be doing any press for the film and will only exhibit it at Sundance during public screenings.  Do what you want.  I’m all for it.  And, frankly, the film looks like it could be something special.  At the very least, it’s a lesson in what a teaser ought to be.  Check it out via Smodcast by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.

That is a really effective trailer.

And John Goodman/Stephen Root/Melissa Leo will get me to see things anyway.

I like Kevin Smiths films, but as a person the man annoys me. He always finds problems with peoples reactions to his films, especially controversial films. Well, what does he expect? Dogma didn’t bother me in terms of its content, and even though I didn’t find it sacrilegious, I can totally understand others seeing it that way. But not Kevin Smith, they were all just crazy to him.

Then he acts like it bothers him so much. Well even if the people were overreacting, he’d be an idiot to not see the controversy coming a mile away. Also, he’s lucky it got him the very little attention it did.

And his twitter account. Holy crap. Half the posts he touts about his modest, the other half talk about how awesome he is. Just make your movies man. Please.

I don’t see how people could be bothered by the content of Dogma and not be MORE bothered by what that content implies.

By the way, :23-:28 is straight out of Private Ryan. I can even identify the exact scenes.

I dunno. It’s a terrific idea for a horror movie, but based on the trailer, it just looks kind of… generic. It looks like every other low-budget horror movie we see these days. I mean, a guy strapped to a chair with a rubber ball in his mouth to keep him from screaming? A scantily clad girl covered in blood and crouching while whimpering in fear? Overuse of handheld cameras? Haven’t we seen all of this before?

Also, it seem kind of odd to me that Kevin Smith, who loves to say that he can’t really direct worth anything, would choose to make a horror film, because horror is a genre that basically lives or dies based on the style and control of the director and his technicians. Nobody involved in this movie has any real horror experience, though some of the technicians, ironically, tend to work on movies that involve or cater to red staters.
I’m still kind of interested, though. I’ll wait for a full-length trailer before making any major judgements.
