10/18: CALLING ALL PREDICTIONS

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 11:15 am · October 18th, 2010

It was suggested last week that I give you all a space to chalk up your own predictions, so that’s what we’ll do.  Every Monday, before the Off the Carpet column is posted, I’ll put up one of these “Calling All Predictions” posts.  Although, I should note that I may not get around to writing the column today.  Busy as always, but I have run a comb through the Contenders section, adjusted rankings here and there and tossed out anything that is currently lacking U.S. distribution.  My take is, if no one has bit by now, no one will.  At least not for 2010 awards consideration.  I’ve also updated the predictions in the right sidebar.

So go ahead and predict to your heart’s content.

    I’ll predict the surprise nominees:

Jennifer Lawrence holds on to that crowded Best Actress category.

Darren Aronofsky claims a Director slot.

Melissa Leo and Amy Adams get nominated for The Fighter.

Aaron Eckhart for Best Actor joining Nicole Kidman and Dianne Wiest as nominees for Rabbit Hole.

I’ll only post for these two, since the other ones are still fuzzy:

    Picture:
    - 127 Hours
    - Another Year
    - Black Swan
    - Inception
    - The Kids Are All Right
    - The King’s Speech
    - The Social Network
    - Toy Story 3
    - The Way Back
    - Winter’s Bone

    Direction:
    - Danny Boyle, 127 Hours.
    - Christopher Nolan, Inception.
    - Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech.
    - David Fincher, The Social Network.
    - Peter Wier, The Way Back.

I’m not buying True Grit until it comes out and proves to be far better than the original. If not, then I’d say it’s a tough buy to put it in what should be the ‘Top 5′ category (directing), even if it’s the Coens who we are talking about.

I just would like to say that Aronofsky’s possible nomination for Black Swan may have a precedent in David Lynch’s (I still can’t believe it) nomination for Mulholland Dr.

Maybe it’s not that unrealistic after all.

Tangled has a much bigger shot at being nominated for best animated feature than The Illusionist. I will eat my shoe if Tangled doesn’t get nominated for best animated features. When early reviewers are comparing it to Beauty and the Beast, you know it’s going to be a big deal.

    Just sayin’.

I’ll post only in these two categories, since the rest is still a fuzzy:

    Best Picture:
    127 Hours
    Another Year
    Black Swan
    Inception
    The Kids Are All Right
    The King’s Speech
    The Social Network
    Toy Story 3
    The Way Back
    Winter’s Bone

    Best Director:
    Danny Boyle, 127 Hours.
    Christopher Nolan, Inception.
    Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech.
    David Fincher, The Social Network.
    Peter Weir, The Way Back.

I’m not buying into True Grit yet. Only if it’s way better than the original then I’ll start considering it, but as of now, I haven’t seen/heard enough to place it in what it should be the ‘Top 5′ category, Directing. Even if it’s the Coens we’re talking about.

PS: Sorry if this message shows up twice :(

There’s probably a limit to how much you can type/paste in, so if you’re putting in all your predictions you’re probably going over the limit.. Wouldn’t be such a bad idea to limit ourselves to just some of the categories though, there’s no real point in discussing sound mixing nominees at this stage anyway.

I made a list of predictions but for some reason I either can’t see them or they did not go through.

And just one last comment – I think that How To Train Your Dragon is in a position to possibly get more nominations than Toy Story 3. It will be tight with each being contenders for Score, Song, and Sound Editing, but I think HTTYD has the advantage in each.

One quick edit to mine is that True Grit is also in my BP predictions, sorry I listed 9 but I submitted it before and made the error on the one that went through.

For what it is worth, I feel the Town, Way Back, and Fighter slots are very much up in the air with Inception and Rabbit Hole being my top alternates.
