Fincher music video memory lane

Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 6:32 pm · October 2nd, 2010

I’m thinking about kicking the tires on our Lists series and offering something up Tuesday in honor of the director of the hour, David Fincher. I’ve been digging back into all of his work looking for an idea (I think I settled on one), and part of the digging was giving his music videos another look. I figured I’d offer a bunch of them up here. My favorite below, tons more after the jump.

That’s a tough one since he hasn’t had 10 films and not all of them in particular are great. Certainly an interesting visual filmmaker so cinematic shots wouldn’t be out of the question. Looking forward to the top 10.

Love Fincher embracing his music video past and working with Nine Inch Nails for the score.

If I was ranking his movies it would go a little something like this (not including The Social Network):
    Zodiac
    Fight Club
    Se7en
    The Game
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    Panic Room
    Alien 3

Alien 3 wasn’t really his fault however, so I really wouldn’t even count it. Panic Room just seemed like he wanted to make a fun B- movie. The Game is a nice, smaller movie. Ben Button was a great visual movie, but the story just tried to hard. All the others are masterpieces IMO.

Yeah, a top ten shots in Fincher’s filmography list is a great idea. I’d love to see that.

    *sigh*

“Freedom 90″, “Vogue” and “Express Yourself” are perfection (in music and video form).

Yeah, “Freedom 90″ is one of the greats — that concept has been aped so many times, but never again executed with quite such panache. Can it really be 20 years old?

Wish they’d release a Directors Label DVD of his video work. (Are we ever going to get that long-promised third series in the collection? It’s been five years now.)

    You need to add:

    Cold Hearted, Paula Abdul
    Roll With It, Steve Winwood

And, if you can find it, since it’s banned…

The End of the Innocence, Don Henley

…are good too. Oh Father was shot by Jordan Cronenweth, I believe.

    Haven’t seen Social Network yet.

@Guy Lodge: Yeah, the Dir Label series badly needs Fincher and Akerlund releases. Hopefully someday…

No, Jordan. Fincher worked with Jordan. In fact, Jordan was the original DP on Alien 3, but because of his Parkinson’s, he left the production early on.

Oh, you’re right, Room. Totally spaced that. Jeff, who shot Fight Club and Social Network, is Jordan’s son, I believe.
