‘For Colored Girls’ trailer

Ever since Lionsgate announced a November 5 release date for Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls,” talk has circulated around an expected Oscar campaign. A set of posters dropped recently that went a long way toward showcasing the female acting talent on display. But is it a contender? Could one of these ladies (or the film itself) slide into the race? Or should we expect the usual from Perry? Lionsgate did a fine job launching “Precious” on the same release date last year, but it also had a headwind coming out of the Sundance and Cannes film festivals.  We’ll have to wait and see.  The new trailer for Perry’s film, released today at Yahoo! Movies, is at the very least handsomely mounted. Have a look by clicking the image below or watch an embed after the jump.

If this film is at all good and there are any memorable, clip-worthy scenes, I could see it picking up a Supporting Actress nod or two. Given how weak that category is, it’s ripe for an upset.

All due respect to Kris and Co., but all of the predicted names seem like safe but unlikely choices. None of them (except possibly Bonham-Carter) are “due” in the same way that the well-respected if underutilized actresses in this film are. Granted, the Perry factor casts a long shadow on the entire production, especially given the very old, very conservative, very WASP-y Academy.

I’m sorry, but Barbara Hershey and Miranda Richardson are way due — not least since neither has even been nominated for their best work.

Another O in EGOT for Whoppi? We all know the next EGOT winner is going to be Anne Hathaway.

Why do you all say EGOT when GETO would be so much catchier?

Well, I don’t like the sound of “I’ll get a GETO” though I’d like to get one actually :p

If Loretta Devine owns the movie the way she owned that trailer, they’d be smart to put their Oscar energy squarely behind her.

Also: Janet’s deep voice! What’s with these secret registers Mariah and Janet have going on?

Haha @AdamA, it’s like Michael Jackson in his Ghost film. I thought, “He can reach that deep?” There is amazing acting potential hiding in so many of these singers, and if they got the right roles, I know they’d breakout. Mariah got close with Precious.

Tyler is not a bad director, He has brought some powerful story lines that could crossover well if the cast was more racially divided (Obviously excluding this release). Also Yes his films have been low budget but with his films doing hundreds of millions, WHO CARES but negative cynical people who don’t appreciating him showing more in the black community besides dope dealing and killing.

Grip your gut. You’re in for some gut wrenching scenes that depicts the black woman’s pain on the Big Screen. Kimberly Clark should be a sponsor.

You know what – the critics raved about The American – and it was the worst piece of crap I had ever seen (nice cinematography wasted on a boring movie).

So I’m gonna do with this like I do with most movies… watch it and make up my own mine. Tyler Perry’s movies have not been the greatest – but they sure as hell have not been the worst. And some of the comments here (the chitlins one especially) border on racist. Maybe people just have different tastes and will therefore like different things – hmmm.
