Russell Crowe wins radio’s Dick of the Year award

You might recall last year’s prestigious honor for showing one’s ass across the radio waves went to Billy Bob Thornton.  This year’s award goes, in a landslide, to Russell Crowe:

Oh my God, Kris, I don’t believe you’re entering Perez Hilton territory. That is So not ‘rage’ or ‘storming out’ that the rags are saying. Those are the ‘dicks’ in this little non-story, and Mr. Lawson was dick-ish as well. Andrew Brown of the Telegraph.uk even admitted Lawson was needling Crowe with the accent and Gladiator questions. (According to a lot of Brits, that’s his way).

Crowe may have gotten a little testy in this interview but I’ve been watching Crowe do press for a solid month, since his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in mid April. He’s flown from Oz to the US to Europe back to US back to Europe. I’ve seen and heard hundreds of these little video/audio interviews and this is the first one I’ve seen where he hasn’t absolutely been charming, witty, and in very good humor. I challenge you to even attempt the pace he’s been keeping this month. The whole accent thing did seem to put him off with Lawson but he still answered all until the Gladiator question with thoughtful answers.

I’d suggest going to view or read about some of the hundreds of interviews Crowe has done in the past month before you paint him with your unfounded adjectives. I’m sorry you feel you have to jump on the bashing bandwagon, Kris, I thought you were better than that.

Oh, and besides, that’s not even the whole interview, which ran about 10 minutes. Way to put up one short moment in a long interview, Kris.

moviefan: It’s not my job to put on a happy face and publicize a film, so no need to challenge me to such a “pace.” And I certainly can’t say I’d be in the happiest of moods throughout, of course, though knowing my own disposition, perhaps I’d develop a salty reputation, too.

Which brings me to my next point. It’s not unfounded adjectives when there are clearly distinguished patterns right in front of you. The guy threw a phone at someone, after all.

Anyway, I put up the segment that was available to me. Why put up the entire interview when all you really need to hear (“needling” or not) is right there. He left a radio show because someone innocently asked about an Irish bent to his accent in the film. I’m sorry if you think I’ve let you down for calling it as I see (or hear) it, but, to me, that makes him a dick.

Speaking with someone on a British radio show, and hearing that your role’s accent (which you take very seriously as an actor) just didn’t work isn’t easy, I think.

My interpretation: Lawson quite bluntly ridiculed Crowe. Crowe was hurt. He left in anger. Poor sense of humor on both sides.

moviefan, it’s no use, really. You can’t explain it to someone like Tapley if you spent hours of your time.

“It’s not my job to put on a happy face and publicize a film, so no need to challenge me to such a “pace.”

Not your job, you say? Is posting youtube clips of ther people for everyone’s “entertainment” and labeling them “dicks of the year” is what yur job is then???

I am serious. Do you actually think you made some sort of a point there?

What makes you think you are in position to critisize “Crowe” anyway?
Oh yeah, lest we forget that Tapley runs a site with primary function of preidicting awards outcomes… a truly significant occupation indeed. So sorry for questioning his happy face credentials. The line between him (and countless parasites like him) and Perez is indeed very slim. Not in their attitudes so much (here I must admit Tapley is nowhere Perez in sheet scummness) as their actual jobs.

I mean that video is somethign both (and probably did) post.

And oh my. That radio interview is hardly even that outrageous. In fact, they way Crowe simply walked out was completely dignified. He hardly stormed out or anything. It’s not like he owed them that interview. The BBC critics and entire British press is just awful anyway.

sorry kris i agree with the other guys. to me, the question was basically the middle finger in disguise. the interview was like:

bbc: russell, you suck in this movie and your accent sucks. you were also a whiny bitch in your most famous movie that you unjustly won an oscar for and you are overrated in general. your thoughts?

    russell: fuck you

bbc: i can’t believe you’re being so rude! how could you say that on a radio interview?! you are such a dick! you are totally justifying our previous opinion of you!

russell: it’s a scottish accent anyway. irish accent + fat guy = scottish accent.

now if you are a big star like russell, someone set up your interview and had to lie to you for a surprise to be sprung. so there is another excuse to be angry. i wouldn’t have reacted like him, i would have just been snobby and arrogant, but i would still have communicated that his question was out of line.

also i must say i’m a little peeved at how critics are calling all these stodgy historical films too intellectual. they used to love anything with an underlying point. and macgruber which was never funny is still at 100% on RT on the excuse of self-reference… it’s like the music industry, critical tastes have apparently passed me by

Mark Lawson is a twat and always has been. Nothing he has ever done has been remotely watchable/listenable. He pretends to be a high-brow let’s ask some intelligent questions, make radio 4 listeners feel all superior kind of guy when in fact he was just saying, “your accent is shit, Robin Hood wasn’t Irish, you suck you suck you suck.” Good on Crowe for not standing for such obvious bullshit.

And Crowe’s accent was very obviously channeling northern England with a little Welsh thrown in. Yes it was awful at times but it certainly wasn’t Irish. It’s not worth bringing up in a supposedly serious interview though, and certainly not in a veiled, cowardly way like this.

Obviously more people are attuned to the psychology of the radio host than I am. Personally, all I heard was a very privileged gentleman show get all huffy and puffy on the air and storm away from an interview.
