UK trailer for ‘The Killer Inside Me’

Sorry for the second lazy embed in a row, but the day serves up what the day serves up. I already offered my thoughts on Michael Winterbottom’s controversial Jim Thompson adaptation from Berlin — it’s a bit of a mixed bag, with Casey Affleck’s riveting lead turn slightly overwhelming the structurally uncertain film. (And yes, Jessica Alba is pretty good in it too.) Still, this British trailer does a superb job of highlighting its atmospheric strengths. It debuted at The Guardian today; a less crisp YouTube version is below.

I still fail to see what this film can say or do that American Psycho didn’t already cover nearly a decade ago.

But hey, I’m usually up for some controversial cinema, even if they usually leave me confused (Antichrist), underwhelmed (The Passion of the Christ) or bored (The Da Vinci Code).

It’s quite a different kettle of fish from “American Psycho,” I think. (Plus, you could then just as easily say that Bret Easton Ellis didn’t write anything that Jim Thompson didn’t already cover in his novel 39 years before him. And that wouldn’t be true either.)

Personally, I think the controversy around the film has been wildly inflated — there’s some tough violence, but nothing we haven’t seen and dealt with before.
