Anton Corbijn blogs ‘The American’

If only for the names involved, Focus Features’ thriller “The American” is one of my more anticipated films of 2010 — George Clooney stars, Rowan Joffe (who had a hand in my best-of-decade contender “Last Resort,” and also has “Brighton Rock” coming up this year) writes and, best of all, Anton Corbijn directs.

Corbijn’s 2007 Ian Curtis biopic “Control” was a remarkable debut — though it felt less like an introduction than an extension of the director’s iconic work in the realms of photography and music video. I’m interested to see how he fares with a glossier genre piece. Blogging the shoot over at Focus’s site, he’s posted some production stills — they look a little like outtakes from one of his Depeche Mode videos, but that’s fine by me.

The failure of the Weinstein Co to secure a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Samantha Morton in “Control” remains one of the most baffling Oscar happenings of the last decade. I saw that a few months early at a film fest and though for sure that she would be in – she is Samantha Morton after all who’s been able to pull magical nominations out of hats before – but then it just never went anywhere.

I thought Sam Riley was even better than Morton in “Control”…

I absolutely loved Control, and Sam Riley’s performance in it. Brighton Rock and The American are easily two of my most anticipated of the year, for Riley and Corbijn respectively, if for nothing else.

Chase, agreed, but a young male newcomer versus an older two-time nominee who has at least two big Oscar clip moments makes the latter a far more surprising omission.
