Its sound mix is great, but I still think this should go to “Avatar” or “Star Trek.”

So at the Oscars it’ll be Editing for The Hurt Locker and Mixing for Avatar or just the other way around?

Excuse my ignorance, but can someone explain what the difference is between sound editing and sound mixing? (in layman/idiot terms)

Dont think it deserves to sweep the technical awards at all.

    @Another Al

Sound Editing:creating new sounds and sound designs.

Sound Mixing:putting together those sounds with dialogue and music and finding the happy medium between them.

The scenes in “The Hurt Locker” that produced the most suspense for me seemed to be a simultaneous result of the film editing and sound mixing. Of the five Sound Mixing Oscar nominees, I think it’s certainly the most accomplished. It’s nice to know CAS agrees.

So The Hurt Locker for mixing
    Avatar for editing

That’s what I’ve had for awhile now, glad to get some reassurance. And THL deserves to win mixing at least. What was notable about Avatar’s sound mixing?

I think that THL will win both plus Cinematography (it went to White Ribbon but I don`t expect the repeat at the Oscars). A total of 7 wins out of 9 nominations. Avatar will win only SFX unless there`s a complete shut out in the store and the win goes to either Star Trek or District 9. Very unlikely but considering how rappidly Avatar is losing in tech categories, I wouldn`t be totally surprised at the upset.

Craig: That’s actualy what I’ve been saying since day one. The Academy at large goes for the film s they like in the tech branches, period, unless they want to spread the wealth. One need only look to last year’s example of the sound categories to see how this will likely go. But the CAS shouldn’t be giving you any “reassurance.” It’s not the mixers that are voting on the sound mixing award, it’s the entire Academy.

So Hurt Locker takes Sound Mixing. Who won Sound Editing at the Guilds Again?

Andy, it will be a sad day if THL wins Original Screenplay. A sad day indeed.

Andy,Rick, yep, you can count on THL winning Original Screenplay. It`s the frontrunner here now, while Bastereds is demoted to a potential upset. THL is set to sweep. There will be no spreading the wealth.

And I’m still predicting Basterds for screenplay, even if it’s just wishful thinking.

I’m still predicting that the Academy is smart and votes “A Serious Man” for Screenplay.

Speaking English: Since the Coens just won two years ago, it doesn’t matter how smart it would be; it’s just not going to happen so soon.

True. Actor goes to Bridges and Score goes to Up. That`s about all THL will lose.

    Joel: Nice!
Ninja: I still best THL and Avatar split the sound categories. Still undecided on cinematography.
