They didn’t mention the difference between the soundtrack for the regular theatre and the laser-aligned IMAX speakers. I’m interested to learn more about that, but apparently there isn’t that much difference after all.

I hope Star Trek can pull off a win in one of the sound categories, but this would be well deserving as well.

I find the sound categories the toughest to predict, often because I go to great lengths to analyze them and I’m not entirely sure most of the voters in the Academy do.

Anyway, I’ll be interested to hear thoughts on the sound categories when we get to those columns. Although I think the odds are good for a technical clean-up from “Avatar,” I’m not entirely convinced yet that it wins both sound categories; I have a hunch they might split them between “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker,” although for the life of me I can’t nail down which one goes which way.

I fully expect a split between Avatar and The Hurt Locker. Since (as I understand it) Sound Mixing is for the recording and Sound Effects is for the creation of sound I’m predicting HL will get the former and Avatar will get the latter. The impressive aspect of Avatar’s sound are the sounds created for the creatures, explosions, imaginary vehicles that is definitely a Sound Effects achievement compared to The Hurt Locker’s sound which I would consider superior to Avatar’s only because so much of Avatar’s sound falls under Sound Effects.

I’d rather have seen this movie win an Oscar for its sound!
