I really hope that Zoe does not get an Oscar nomination for ‘Avatar.’ As much as the performance was “revolutionary” if James Cameron didn’t like something that she did he could easily tweak a facial expression or exaggerate a reaction in editing. The fact that he has that power means the performance isn’t really her own.

If she gets nominated and this new trend catches on, it may be the death of acting as we know it.

Technicalities aside, am I the only one who thought Saldana was rather wooden in Avatar?

    I don’t know. I don’t know any Na’vi I can compare her performance to. Maybe they’re a “wooden” people. :)

Kris I love your response. I wouldn’t nominate her, but I did like her though. I hope this is the beginning of better roles for her.

PS. Happy New Year, Guy, Kris, John and every one else at In Contention. Glad I came across them this year.

I actually did a piece on Soderbergh’s work for the decade. Che was the only real masterpiece, but the man was so prolific, shifting in styles and genres in such a seemingly-easy way. Greats like Darren Aronofsky and Paul Thomas Anderson simply didn’t make enough films.

I don’t like Zoe Saldana, period. Didn’t care for her in “Star Trek,” didn’t care for her in “Avatar.”

I wish Thandie Newton would take her place as the black chick in white movies.

Neytiri was sexy. I found her extremely attractive and found her smile more exhilarating than all those CGI shots. But is this a case of people thinking from elsewhere and not their minds. I mean come on, Oscar nomination for that “”performance””, ha!
