Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

That’s the official title of the fourth “Pirates” film, releasing the summer of 2011, according to word emanating from D23 in Anaheim.  Thoughts?

I’m pretty much Pirates of the Caribbeaned-out, so I couldn’t care less what they call this installment. Besides, just about all fourth installments of popular franchises end in disaster (Superman IV, Batman & Robin, Alien Resurrection, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, Terminator Salvation), so why waste two-and-a-half hours and $12 on something that’ll probably suck?

    That’s funny…

“On Stranger Tides” is also the title of a fantasy novel by Tim Powers released in 1988…which Ron Gilbert said, inspired him to do “The Secret of Monkey Island.”

Gosh, I really wished Steven Spielberg would have gone through with his idea of making a Monkey Island movie!!

Now THAT would have been AWESOME!!!

    Oh well…

I’m gonna keep an open mind on this. With Knightley and Bloom out, and a new director, this could work… or it might not. The point is, we’ve no clue, so no point in shitting on it just yet.

I’ve never liked any title that begins with a preposition, I think it’s weak. But I’m more than willing to give Pirates another shot now that it’s in completely different hands. I love seeing how someone else handles a world and characters conceived in different minds.

I assume you’re referring to “At World’s End,” but there are quite a few movie titles that begin with a preposition, including this year’s “Up” movies.

    “About Schmidt”
    “Above the Rim”
    “Across the Universe”
    “After Hours”
    “Against All Odds”
“Around the World in 80 Days”

That’s just the beginning of the alphabet, and not including “Along Came a Spider” and “As You Like It,” which arguably are not prepositional uses of those words.

I’m of the minority opinion in that I will defend the second and third “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies to the death, but I’m skeptical of the next installment. With Depp on board, I’m sure it’ll be sufficiently entertaining, but I’m not sure how much story there is left to tell. Still, it’ll be interesting to see how Rob Marshall tackles an action-adventure franchise.

As for the title, can’t say I’m a huge fan, but it doesn’t affect my attitude toward the movie one way or the other.

    On Stranger Titles?

The franchise got buried in an over complicated trilogy-story that killed all the fun. Single-film storylines are much more fun for this.

I think Johnny Depp is brilliant so I’m most definitely interested but I do not like the title. It’s comes off as a National Lampoon-esque film which I think is horrible marketing. “Curse of the Black Pearl” has a great built in vibe as opposed to “On Stranger Tides” and the Don Knotts feel.

I’m all for Johnny again and another flavor for a 4th installment but I really hope they rethink the vibe they want to put off.

Incidentally, Rocky IV was an excellent 4th installment!

Popcorn movies are important, too! :)
Some of them made history (like the Indiana Jones Trilogy – no, I’m not counting the 4th)
And..if you have a johnny depp in your pop corn movie
..well it won’t be Transformers 2

This is more of a third film. Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End were essential one film. Therefore I’m not too hesitant about this one.

My excitement and willingness to see a 4th installment will be proportional to how many minutes under 3 hours they keep it. The last one just went on forever. As long as the length is kept in check though, I think it could be a fun movie.

Blah. This franchise got old after the first one. Terrible sequels. Especially that third one.. felt like that was never going to end.

Although this is with a different director. Maybe that will bring some hope. Otherwise, can’t say I really care too much about this.

jess, you make such a great point. Thanks for your insight. I’m so sick and tired of Johnny Depp and his pompous ass demanding big budget Studio films. I mean, seriously every single summer we have to watch one of his popcorn films with big explosions, huge car chases, the exploitation of women and the glorifying of violence. Why can’t he just be more eccentric and make better choices as an artist?

Wow. That “selling out” comment is so irritating? Not just here but in general.

Ehhh. As long as Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are out, and Geoffrey Rush is in, I will see it.

@jess, Ronn: Strangely enough, it isn’t the Pirates films that are selling Depp out, it’s his own frequent collaborator Tim Burton who’s making him play pancake-faced gonzo vaudevillians which are nowhere near his best acting trait.

I think a new direction is the best thing to do here. I’ve loved the first and third and the second did really nothing for me. But anything can happen.

I agree with Jess….sort of. I think regardless of what JDepp is in, it will be nothing short of a work of genius….HOWEVER…at the end of P-3, JDepp DID say he wouldn’t go on to make P-4 unless EVERYONE was on board. Funny how he and the writers are the only ones that seem to be returning…including people off screen like Verbinski. I say let the franchise rest as a trilogy. Three was nearly bad enough.
