We’re going to get a bunch of “nominated for two academy awards, including Best Picture” movies now.

Brian, from yesterday’s mammoth Oscar-goes-to-10 thread.

Well said!!! I am losing respect on the Academy more and more every year. Can’t anyone do anything?

And the scary part is, it might just come true.

Haha! Touche. Anyway, I definitely agree. I think that AMPAS is simply averting the main problem, which is the actual voting body. 10 Best Picture nominees could dilute the significance of the nomination.

Stranger still, perhaps the occasional film with a solitary Best Picture nom, and nothing else. I’m sure “Gran Torino” would have made a Top 10 this year. What a horrific thought.

After thinking coolly, the idea seems worse and worse. The academy showed it has extremely poor taste last year, if they can manage to nominate garbage with just 5 nominees, with 10, the final list would end up looking beyond ridiculous.

With Cannes, you have 20 mostly unseen films, while the academy carefully deliberates and picks its 5 nominees. And yet the line-up at Cannes is always more spectacular than the Academy. If anything, change the voting body.

you knw that case of only two nominations including best picture has happened before when there were only 5 nominees.. remember that great year for movies that was 1994? you know with forrest gump, pulp fiction, the shawshank redemption and quiz show. what was the other? four weddings and a funeral which only had benn nominated for only one other oscar, writing

I dunno, I don’t have a big issue with the lone (or only a couple of nods) and then BP; after all I think it makes it exciting as with the writing and directing you often can tell what the nominees will be, now there will be chances for out of the blue shocking nods.

Plus we have had things like Four Weddings getting in with two noms or Two Towers and Jaws getting in with no other major nominations anyway.
