‘Whatever Works’ poster

The sexy, teasingly framed artwork for “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” was one of my favorite posters of 2008. Suffice to say I cannot offer similar approval of this dreary new one-sheet for “Whatever Works.” Just how much time did they spend on it? And at no point did anyone on the design team meekly suggest, “Hey, Evan Rachel Wood is a hot young actress, and you know, the film’s biggest talking-point is the May-December thing she has going on with Larry David. Maybe, just maybe, it might be worth sticking her on the poster too?”

    They should have had:

From the director of ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’

Evan Rachel Wood and Henry Cavill in the foreground looking smitten.

Larry David and Patricia Clarkson behind (looking her parents)

I thought Henry Cavill was one of the main characters. According to that poster he’s not even in the top six.

Alex: I hardly think Woody Allen needs to be introduced as “the director of” any specific film. He’s Woody Allen, for crying out loud.

Actually, while I don’t like the poster at all, I think it’s kind of cute that the typeface is the only clue to Allen’s presence.

The trailer for “Vicki Cristina Barcelona” mentioned “from the director of Match Point” if I’m not mistaken.

Guy Lodge: I was making the cynical point that people would be more likely to respond to ‘from the director of Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ than ‘from Woody Allen’….how many films ago did they stop putting his name on the poster for fear of tainting it?

I am so sick of Woody Allen constantly filming his masturbatory fantasies and then charging the movie going public 10 dollars to see them.

Let’s face it, Larry David is the main draw in this film and that’s exactly what the poster promises. I think the design ‘works’ just fine.

The trailer is now available at Apple.com

The poster is just ok. The trailer, on the other hand is great.

It would all come full circle if Larry says “these pretzels are making me thirsty”.
