‘Slumdog’ wins WGA’s adapted screenplay award…

Anyone surprised?  David Carr reports:

After listing the nominees – Eric Roth for “Button,” Christopher Nolan for “Dark Knight”, John Patrick Shanley for “Doubt,” Peter Morgan for “Frost/Nixon” and Simon Beaufoy for “Slumdog”, [presenter Terry George] made the unsurprising announcement that “Slumdog” had won.

Mr. Beaufoy examined the winged sculpture thingie that the WGA gives out and pronounced it “beautiful., and there are many awards out there that are not genuinely beautiful.”

A terrible year for awards. Slumdog winning everything it doesn’t deserve! Ugh. Hope 2010 will be better.

    Go Milk!
    Go Meryl!
    Go Sean!
    Go Van Sant!

I find myself in a weird position, you know, KNOWING that “Slumdog” is the best film of the year. Hard to complain. But I’ve certainly been on the other side of the fence.

Wouldn’t it be great if one of these guilds grew a pair and gave their top prize to something OTHER that Slumdog, just to shake things up?

I find myself in a weird position, you know, KNOWING that there is no objectivity in film taste, and that no film is truly the “best” of any given year. Hard to complain. I’ve certainly gotten used to people pretending their opinion is more valid than anyone else’s.

Do you think Slumdog is actually the best film of the year? Really?!!! Even over films like Milk, The Dark Knight, Frost/Nixon and The Wrestler?
