Voila! Viola Davis the talk of the Internets

Like I said in yesterday’s “Off the Carpet” column, despite my feelings for “Doubt,” I would never take anything away from Viola Davis’ stunning performance, coming into her own as an actress to reckon with after putting out solid work for years.

Sasha Stone has collected some positive marks for the actress over at Awards Daily, while Tom O’Neil chats it up with Ms. Davis at Gold Derby.  Here’s a video:

What a likable woman. I am rooting for her to get a nomination, but I’ll be honest, I don’t think she should win.

If you think about her character, and about the scene that she’s being nominated for, it was already written to be the single standout scene in the movie. When she takes a stand in that scene, confronting Sister Aloysius, it’s the script that creates the jaw-dropping effect that I felt in my theater yesterday. Still, given the amount of emotion there, I feel like this is a performance that could have dampened the movie considerably, or lifted it up. It did the latter. Viola even hints at this at the end of the clip — she felt that if she wasn’t bad, and if she could hold her own, than she would be good. There was no middle ground in that part.

For me, I just don’t see how a role that is written so well — and I didn’t love the screenplay either, but Mrs. Miller is a highlight — should be given the highest acting award. I don’t know if my logic makes sense there, but again, I’m rooting for a nomination and not a win.
