‘State of Play’

Posted by · 10:04 pm · December 23rd, 2008

I saw this trailer go up on Yahoo! Movies earlier tonight but I’ve been waiting for a YouTube copy.  Well, here it is, and despite a somewhat pedestrian feel, I’m really looking forward to it.  Kevin Macdonald is a promising talent (and he went through his share of trouble on this shoot, I gather).  Hopefully it shapes up:

Looks a bit silly but a fun thriller. Together with The International, Duplicity this will make for some fun and intelligent thrillers in 2009.

It doesn’t look as though it will differentiate itself from the original miniseries at all, but I have to say that I don’t have a problem seeing anything Tony Gilroy writes.

yeah, with Gilroy and Matthew Michael Carnahan as scripters, and McDonald directing, this should be a fun, tight, political thriller. Also, the cinematography is by Rodrigo Prieto, who is an incredible talent.

Tapley do you get as psyched for DC locations in film as I do? I almost looked forward to THE INVASION just because they used a Metro station I used to take home from work.

Also I love him, but I feel like Russell Crowe might be fundamentally miscast.

“Russell, you’re going to be playing a hot-shot reporter”

“All right, I’m going to look like an overweight and greasy mastiff”

    “Well we would…”

    “Check my contract”

It’s actually Clint Mansell’s music from SMOKIN’ ACES, which has to be one of the best scores for a crap movie.

I agree, wish it was the original cast. I love Crowe and Affleck where roomies in college, isnt there like 8-10 years between them? not mention Crowe looks a lot older than he has to in this movie.

I didn’t know Tony Gilroy and Billy Ray were helping with the writing on this. That bodes well. It used to be just Carnahan and frankly, he sucks. I hope it’s good. The original miniseries was so good. I remember watching it all in one sitting, and just being amazed that something this good could be on television.
