EXCLUSIVE: Marisa Tomei featurette

(The exclusive on this runs out on Monday, so you’ll probably find the video in a few other spots.  So I figured I’d revert to YouTube, since I can’t get my Flash embedding to work and the Quicktime file takes a lot of bandwidth.  Enjoy.)

Marisa Tomei has put together a nice career renaissance as of late.  A few crucial spots on TV’s “Rescue Me” and a brilliant turn in last year’s “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” made for nice appetizers to her wonderful and more widely accepted work in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler,” leading to a stretch of accolades that, fingers crossed, will soon lead to an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.  She’s fared well so far this season, taking down a trio of awards in one day earlier this week and giving “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” star Penélope Cruz a run for her precursor money in the process.

Fox Searchlight has been kind enough to give In Contention a first look at the following featurette, a discussion with Tomei about her vision of her character, Pam (a.k.a. Cassidy), a new, more tangible spin on the classic “hooker (er, stripper) with the heart of gold” archetype and one that the actress elevates to meaningful heights throughout.  Despite a SAG snub yesterday morning, I think she could still be on course for a tip of the Oscar hat next month, and taking a look at this video, it’s easy to see why she deserves it.

I was too young in 1993 to really know what was happening, but I never understood the brouhaha over Tomei’s win. Was her competition – name recognition aside – really that much better? I know WHAT happened, but I still don’t quite understand WHY people felt the need to pile on her. She wasn’t even that big a name at the time, right?

Glad to see her getting her due. Ridiculously underrated, and still gorgeous at 44.

As an aside, Rex Reed can bite me.

She’s still that girl from Seinfeld that George wanted to date while he had Susan :D.

Agreed, John K. It’s simple snobbery since “My Cousin Vinny” wasn’t exactly an Oscar movie, and some people obviously can’t see the performance through all that. Although Judy Davis was also really deserving that year, I think the Tomei win ranks as one of the Academy’s best, gutsiest choices.

For my money, she should’ve won for “In the Bedroom” too.

Agreed, Guy. And she definitely should have won for “In the Bedroom” (although I wouldn’t have minded a Helen Mirren win that year, either).

2001 was all about Maggie Smith for me.

Ugh…all men of course. She’s not that damn good in The Wrestler…just naked.
I think she is overrated and I am sorry that Evan Rachel Wood is getting no ink and Marisa is.
Marisa is NOT a nice person, and was not all that co-operative on the set…as opposed to Wood and everyone else in that movie. Ask Rourke or Aronofsky point blank about Tomei and see if they flinch!
    Geez!
