POLL: Is Heath Ledger a lock to win Best Supporting Actor?

Posted by · 1:40 pm · November 24th, 2008

We really need a new poll this week.  That “Wrestler” query has run its course (the majority of you thinking, no, the film won’t suplex its way into the Best Picture line-up).

This week, inspired by Guy’s post below, I figured we’d ask a question that has been on everyone’s mind for a few months now: Does Heath Ledger have the Best Supporting Actor Oscar sewn up for his performance in “The Dark Knight?”

So…let us know in the sidebar poll!

I haven’t seen all of the contenders yet, but Ledger seems to be a lock for a nomination, if not the win.

I am really hoping that Eddie Marsan gets one for his work in Happy-Go-Lucky.

Bill Irwin deserves more credit than he’s gotten for his note-perfect work in Rachel Getting Married.

Colin Farrell should (but won’t) get a nom for In Bruges.

Downey Jr. was incredibly funny in Tropic Thunder, but we all know that the Academy doesn’t really care about rewarding comedies.

Hell, Brad Pitt was priceless in Burn After Reading…but that won’t happen.

This year is very strong on all of the acting fronts.

Hoffman. Doubt. What the fuck is going on on all these Oscar blogs? It’s him and Ledger. That’s it.

I think Hoffman is a probable nominee, Jeff. I just don’t see the Academy feeling the need to give him a second statuette so soon after his first.

You’re welcome to disagree. No need to get huffy about it, though.

    There are no locks.

I think all of this “no one else is worthy” talk actually hurts the chances of Ledger winning. I know I find all this Joker hysteria kind of annoying.

This is no “we were so wrong in ’05” throwaway. Ledger is fucking brilliant here. They have to nominate 5 actors, however. Hoffman, Shannon, Fiennes, Franco and company should feel honored to be mentioned in the same breath as Heath. ‘Nuff said.

I think the only reason he isn’t a lock to win is because he is dead. If he were alive he’d be a lock to win. If they give it to PSH, so help me. Imagine the person that beats Ledger, if a person exists. What would they do?

Uh, I’m sure they’d survive AJ. What did Ernest Borgnine and Yul Brynner do when they beat a dead James Dean, twice?

He’s gonna win. There’s no question. At all. And it’s not gonna be a sympathy vote either. He’s just that good.

I wasn’t getting huffy just dont think ledger is a lock. He’ll probably win and he probably deserves to but Hoffman was great in a very tough role and I think it’s his pert that prevents Heath from being a lock. Shannon was also excellent but he should take the mom he deserves and be happy. He is not ledgers main competition, it’s Hoffman. He’s the reason u don’t walk out of doubt and don’t automatically assume guilt. He walks a very fine line and gives a powerful performance. He was robbed last year of a non for before the devil and got one for cww which as a bad movie gtg

He is the frontrunner and will probably win, but I don’t want to declare anything a lock just yet; even in Animated Feature where Wall-E seems to have a commanding lead I’m leaving the door slightly open in case Waltz with Bashir has a huge impact upon its release.

Personally while Ledger was good and easily the best live-action Joker, I feel he is a bit overrated and I can name 4 or 5 supporting actor performances I liked more so far this year (he actually isn’t even my favorite serial killer performance in the category, that would be Jason Butler Harner in Changeling).

Ledger will win hands down. It will be also be the reward for the film itself, as well as for Ledger’s great career. I just can’t picture anyone else winning. So help me if someone upsets (like Hoffman, Shannon, even Downey Jr.), we’re gonna hear about it for years!!!

Ledger will win even though his isn’t even the best supporting performance in “The Dark Knight” let alone the whole year.

I don’t think there is any question about if Ledger will be nominated, and I’m almost positive he will win. (if he wasn’t up against such a great performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Capote” a few years ago, he should have won Best Actor for “Brokeback Mountain”)

And I agree with what Aaron said, I think the award will not only be for his great supporting performance, it will also be to celebrate his career and give some recognition to “The Dark Knight” film. (despite what some people say I don’t think The Dark Knight will be nominated for any other awards- especially Best Picture- allthough I do think Christopher Nolan does deserve a Best Director nomination)

…and as for Dev Patel, I think he would be considered for the Best (Lead) Actor category, not Best Suporting Actor.
