Boy, David Poland sure is pissed he wasn’t FIRST!

Dealing with babies in public really isn’t worth it so I’m yanking the post.  My sole intention was to defend Guy, who did not deserve to be disrespected in this manner.

I found it kind of funny. Peter Bart’s column about W and F/N was flat out retarded.

Peter Bart is senile. They guy should retire. He embarrasses himself almost every week.

David Poland is a functioning illiterate with zero sense of writing style. He’s a cry baby. I try reading his stuff and I get a headache; the typos, the slips in grammar, his overall inability to write coherently is just a joke. He’s no more of a “professional critic” than anyone else around here, including myself. Opinions are like assholes — everyone’s got one.

I am a professional film critic (whatever that means anymore), writing for several outlets including incontention.com, and appear from time to time on television. Yes I make money as a critic, in fact I make a good living doing what I do. There are very few “professional” critics I read with any loyalty, and even a smaller amount I respect.

When Guy Lodge makes a comment on something I have written I read it and take in every word.
When Guy Lodge writes a post I read it with great interest and almost always come away have learned something. Does he get paid for what he writes? I don’t know and frankly I don’t care, but we sure get paid for reading his work…pure enjoyment from someone who clearly loves cinema. I look forward to each Guy Lodge post and comment and will continue to do so.
Poland can piss off; keep doing what you are doing Guy, very few do it as well.

Thanks, John, that could be the nicest thing anyone has said about my writing. It means a lot — and I can only return the compliment to you.

Onwards and upwards. Silly as the Poland thing was, the more attention he directs to the site, the better!

    Guy,

I enjoyed the review. Personally, I’m sorry that you didn’t enjoy the film more; I was hoping for it to transition well to the big screen.

    Keep doing what you’re doing.

Can someone please explain what’s going on? I know Ryan said nevermind, he figured it out, but I’m still a little lost here. Love this site!

No big deal, fumero. David Poland basically got annoyed that “Frost/Nixon” hadn’t been screened for the likes of himself in LA, leading to an early review (which he said was “AICN-style”) getting written by a “non-pro” like myself. A fair enough industry gripe, but he was needlessly rude about our site.

All in the past now, though.

Oh, I know what you mean. I’m not a blogger critic myself, but I find it ridiculous that these so-called “professional critics,” (some of whom are better called “reviewers” than critics, since they apparently don’t understand the meaning behind the word critic), detest bloggers so much, since film is a form of art, open to ALL criticisms, no matter the critic, just so long as they be useful and have something to say; the purpose of art is to inspire reaction and discusion and feeling; without such things, art as we know it has no purpose, and unless something happened that the rest of us didn’t know about, I don’t recall the rules of writing dictating that only those who are pretentious PAID assholes are allowed to critique film. It’s not your fault you don’t have his job, or that you saw the film first before he did; he refers to your review as “AICN-style,” but he did read your review and apparently, he does know what AICN is, which is funny, because the same cannot be said for MCN, nor have I ever heard anyone use the term “MCN-style” in reference to ANYTHING AT ALL. And there’s no such thing as a “non-pro” either; I like the fact that I can get on the net and read hundreds reviews of any kind; I happen to like critics, especially Roger Ebert, and despite what those in Hollywood who can’t handle criticism would say, we do need them; it’s only when it’s the critics themselves turning on others for wanting to do the same thing as them that I find offensive; it’s like they’re doing the same exact thing to bloggers that actors and filmmakers have done for so long to them, surmounting that they’re opinions aren’t shit and they have no right to exist. Even CHUD has taken to griping about bloggers, when in fact bloggers are getting they’re start in the same way CHUD and various other regular movie sites did back in the 90’s, most of whom, (the popular ones), are making pretty good money now. As a matter of fact, I have yet to read a truly crappy movie blog review; my guess is tthat these so-called “pros” are mad because they know that not only are some of these blogs well written, but in some cases, they’re better written and more interesting than anything they’ve ever written.
