You name the list

Posted by · 10:49 am · October 7th, 2008

If you haven’t noticed by now, we’ve been running weekly lists here at In Contention.  They were sporadic for a few months, but I recently decided to make them a mainstay, and we’re going to try to put a little more “umph” into the feature than you tend to find across the web.

We’ve already run lists of the top 10 performances you’re underestimating, the top 10 films of 1999 and the top 10 Paul Newman performances, but in lieu of an actual list today (we’ve got a few on deck), I wanted to throw it out to the readership for some guidance further down the road.

What sorts of lists would you like to see?  The kookier the better.

    McGuff gave a good one….

top 10 most criminally un-nominated actors (somebody gimme some bale lovin)

top 10 most dispicably bought oscars (great marketing, crap movie… dreamgirls)

top 10 most unfortunately squandered talents (premature death, poor career choices etc.)

but i would also love to do a full bracket of decade 10 bests (movies, perfs) leading to all time bests

I’ll definitely be doing a personal 10 of all time list. Been meaning to commit that to record for years now.

I like Casey’s idea of a bracket poll system… its much more fun to vote for movie head-to-head.

To go back and second a few, I love Chris’ first idea above (which characters you wish you’d written), as well as Casey’s idea about the Oscars that have been bought. I think that’s a side of the business that only few are privy to, so it would be nice to see an insider’s (Kris’) take.

10 Worst “Best Original Song” winners…

    “You Light Up My Life”

    Gag me, please.
This category unfairly takes up almost 30 minutes of each Oscar show. The 4 acting categories don’t even get that amount of time combined.

Isn’t it time this category got bumped right off the air? Or at least reduced to a 15 second sound bite of each nominee.

They wonder why the Oscar ratings decline year after year. This is when everyone changes the channel and loses interest.

Does anyone agree with me that this category receives unfair coverage?

Patrick: It depends who’s nominated in a given year, doesn’t it? For me, the Oscar show would be a lot poorer without the magic moments that artists like Springsteen, Bjork or Hansard/Irglova bring to the stage. Unfortunately, it means we have to sit through the odd bit of drivel too. Such is life.

On the lists: great suggestions, guys. I like the one about actors with limited talent too — you could go further and say the Best Bad Actors.
