Naming and shaming

I think it’s fair to say that Jack White and Alicia Keys’ Bond theme (which so disappointed yours truly) is not going down all that well.

So much so that Popjustice, one of my personal favourite websites, is seeking retribution.

Am I the only one who thought that Chris Cornell’s song for “Casino Royale” wasn’t all that bad? Not my favorite theme ever, but I thought it was pretty good. I only ask because I’ve read some articles stating that the new song is even worse than Cornell’s (which it most definitely is).

I don’t think you’re alone, Liz. I personally found Cornell’s theme turgid and anachronistic (it’s SO 1995 to me), but when I said as much in a previous post, there was a lot of defence for it in the comments.

I agree this is worse, though. I thought Cornell’s song was dull, but at least it had a semblance of structure and melody. The new one is just a mess.

Haha, I wouldn’t listen to popjustice. They’d only be happy if the song was sung by Girls Aloud.

Actually, maybe DO listen to popjustice, that would be friggin awesome.

Exactly, Patrick — a Girl Aloud Bond theme, something manically constructed and wildly produced along the lines of “Biology,” would be genius. At the very least, it would be more fun.

I love Girls Aloud. There, I said it.

Guy you are not alone, I have loved them for a very long time! Especially the moody, ginger one.

‘Biology’ is also my choice track, so props for that mention.

Liz, I love “You Know My Name”. I agree it was a bit anachronistic though.

Ah, the ginger one — the thinking man’s choice. Though I must admit, I’ve really warmed to Cheryl Tweedy in the wake of “The X Factor.”

God, I am such a pleb.

I am now playing “Biology” as an accompaniment to an animated Bond credit sequence in my head. With a few lyrical tweaks, it really works. “Sexy! No No No” — never my favourite standalone track — works well in this context too.

    Should I seek help?

Guy, I’m officially a big fan of yours now that you linked to PopJustice (on INCONTENTION!! POPJUSTICE!!!) and admitted to liking Girls Aloud.

And, damn, a Girls Aloud Bond theme would be, quite possibly, the most amazing thing ever. EVER. “Biology” is the best song of the decade, it must be said, and you can totally see them dancing in silhouette as Daniel Craig walks around menacingly during the opening credits.

I now resent the makers of “Quantum of Solace” for not having the balls to actually do that. And they never will. Damn.

Thank you, Glenn, I aim to please. I assure that I will link to Popjustice whenever the most tenuous opportunity arises.

And the accompanying post on your own blog is — wait for it — AMAZING. (Minus points for calling The Tweedy by her unhappily married name, though.) The thought of a Girls Aloud Bond Girl pastiche video is positively tingly — they should just do one anyway for their next single to prove the point.

This is officially my favourite comment thread since I started at InContention. Amazing.

Let’s be honest now, a Girls Aloud Bond theme would be incredible.

    From Russia With Love Machine
A View To A Call The Shots
    Something Kinda Octopussy

That wasn’t quite as funny as I thought it would be. I will come back if I think of something better.

Is that THE Peter Robinson? If so, I am supremely honoured.

That was a promising start — keep ’em coming.

    Dr No Good Advice
    Dr! No No No
    See The Daylights

Is it too late to petition the Bond producers for a Girls Aloud theme? It would be worth delaying the film’s release for a few months.

    Hello, it is me. (Hello!)

I am going to let you have the last word on the Girls Aloud/James Bond thing because I am only going to embarrass myself.

I will contact the Bond people and see what they have to say.
