Seeking the real haters

Addressing Diablo Cody’s bizarre rant against her “haters” (seriously, is there a less worthwhile target than IMDB fanboys?), The Guardian’s Xan Brooks has come up with a witheringly tart response. It amused me, anyway:

The author also explained that “5-million 12-year-olds think I’m Buck Henry. Accept it”, boasted that “my pilot was so good it got picked up for a series” and (most intriguingly) admitted to “jamming toxic silicon toys up my ass for money.” Ms Cody admits that she is perplexed as to why anyone might dislike her and implies that she has discussed the issue at length with her therapist. Lucky old therapist.

For those who aren’t fussed about Diablo Cody one way or the other, reading her blog is a disconcerting experience. It’s like being screamed at in the street by a stranger. I don’t know the back-story, if indeed there is one. I’m not sure whether her rage is entirely justified, or whether the “haters” are just the demons of an unbalanced brain, constantly whispering that her pilot stinks and that “5-million 12-year-olds” actually think she’s Buck Rogers.

So, like I say, I’m slightly at a loss and need this explained to me. Does anyone actively hate Diablo Cody?

I mean, before they read her blog?

I don’t know, all I know is that I love her and even if she was just addressing her inner demons there, she just told ‘em. In a way only someone with her odd diction could.

Hmm, I’m not convinced. I don’t know what she really proved with the whole tirade.

If she wants to prove her worth as a screenwriter, the best way to do it is to ignore the so-called haters, knuckle down and write more screenplays. Preferably good ones. To me, this kind of defensiveness just makes her look insecure.

She doesn’t hide the fact that she’s insecure, at all. Anyone that read her blog pre-Juno knows this, and wouldn’t/isn’t surprised by this blog entry.

Ranting on her rant seems doubly ignorant, too. It’s like hipster circle jerking.

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and talking with her, and she was nothing but lovely and genuine while we talked, so I might be defending her. She gets the same kind of hate that Shia gets: fanboys and cinefiles furious that someone they deem so unworthy gets to fulfill all their dreams instead of them. And granted, she can’t really handle and understand the hate in a way the haters want her to. Whiiiiiich is ridiculous in and of itself.

Should she have said a big “fuck you” to the haters on her blog? Probably not. But sincerely, who gives a fuck?

Let me make it clear that I’m neither hater nor hipster. I wasn’t crazy about Juno’s script personally — but I respect the achievement and genuinely like the fact that someone like her can win an Oscar. As a screenwriter, I find that inspiring rather than dispiriting.

    Just wanted to clarify that.

I like that she’s just human like everyone else. Who gives a sh*t about the rules of H’wood. She’s a special girl in a lot of ways. She’s also very unusual in an equal amount and that is what a lot of journo’s probably can’t understand. I support her rant by not taking it too seriously.

I actually really liked “Juno,” and I think Diablo Cody has some serious potential.

So with that said, can we PLEASE refrain from the “haters are just jealous” argument? Please? I mean, it’s a free country and you’re allowed to make the argument if you want to. But the arugment is lazy and annoyingly dismissive – some people might (*gasp*) have legitimate reasons for their opinions. I dislike Shia LaBeouf because he has limited range as an actor, he has yet to make a truly good film, and the media insists on pushing him down my throat as a future superstar when he has not done anything to justify the hype.

But no, I’m just jealous. Whatever.

Sorry for the reactionary comment – I’ve been having a bad week. Rereading your comment, I don’t think you were generalizing to the entire population, just a specific subset. Apologies for the misunderstanding.

Like the moment where her snarky facade finally cracked at the Oscars, this blog entry of hers simply reminds me that she’s a human being. An insecure young woman who has achieved an uncommon amount of success.

If Xan Brooks is as clueless and unconcerned about Cody as she claims, why is she reading her myspace blog?

I didn’t like Juno very much, but I’m always surprised at how much hate there is for Cody on every message board where her name comes up. And yes, sorry John, I think much of it is fueled by the jealousy of failed screenwriter wannabes, many of them male.

At any rate, it’s irrational bitterness and it’s driven by something that says more about the hater than the hated.
